نحوی و کشتیبانThe Grammarian and the Boatman
Page 1. One day, a learned man boarded a small boat to cross a river. He carried a scroll and spoke proudly about his knowledge. The kind boatman began rowing away from the shore.
Page 2. The grammarian asked, “Have you studied grammar?” The boatman replied, “No. I have spent most of my life on the water.” The grammarian said, “Then half your life is lost!” The boatman said nothing and continued on.
Page 3. Suddenly, a strong wind began to blow. The waves rose and the boat rocked from side to side. The boatman lowered the sail, secured the ropes, and calmly guided the boat.
Page 4. The boatman asked, “Learned sir, do you know how to swim?” The grammarian answered anxiously, “No, I never learned.” The boatman said, “If the boat sinks, you may lose all of your life.”
Page 5. The boatman gave the grammarian a rope and told him to hold it tightly. Then he rowed skillfully toward the shore. This time, the grammarian listened humbly to his guidance.
Page 6. When they reached the shore, the grammarian thanked the boatman and said, “Forgive me for being proud of what I knew.” Book learning is valuable, but practical skill, experience, and humility are important too.
