01

Upon the tangled curtains of my rebellious desires,

02

there was the strange image of an unknown face,

03

the image of a face which, when I sought it eagerly,

04

continually fled and would not show itself to me.

05

One night, the weary gaze of a man upon me

06

glided, grew weak, and remained silent there.

07

When I wanted to break this thread of gazing,

08

my heart beat and drew me toward him once more.

09

I was hopeless and weary from that searching of mine.

10

Coyly I smiled and said, “Come, come.”

11

There was a long road and a night of pleasure ahead.

12

Reason lamented and said, “Where are you going, where?”

13

There was a long road, and alas, along the way,

14

that man lamented, “Where is the end of the road?”

15

When my weary eyes stared at him,

16

I saw that he hurried, and a chain was upon his feet.

17

A chain upon his feet—why, O my God?

18

A hand scattered the seed of pain upon the field of my heart.

19

A tear ran, and amid my tears I murmured,

20

“A chain is upon his feet, which I cannot break.”

21

It was night, and that gaze full of pain erased

22

from my weary eyes the image of sleep.

23

I laid my lips upon his, and cried out from pride,

24

“O unknown man, drink this wine.

25

Yes, drink, and say nothing, for amid all this,

26

within my heart, from the passion of your love, is a burning fire.

27

The road is closed behind me, but alas and pain,

28

your feet too are bound by another chain.”

29

His arms glided around my body.

30

My hair became dishevelled upon his shoulder.

31

The night was dark, and in search of a kiss, there settled

32

at every moment his thirsty mouth upon my lips.

33

Suddenly I looked, and saw upon the curtains

34

that the unknown image was no longer unknown.

35

I pressed him to my breast, and said to myself, “Alas,

36

I have understood, O my God, who that unknown one is:

37

a familiar one who is bound by another chain.”
