LineEnglish translation
01

You have fled from me, and I, simple-hearted, still

02

cannot believe your unkindness and cruelty.

03

I bound my heart so deeply to your love that, after this,

04

I shall no longer desire another beloved.

05

You went, and with you my joy and hope went.

06

How can I desire your love any longer?

07

How can I seek the intoxication of one kiss of yours

08

within this bitter and black silence?

09

Remember that woman, that madwoman who slept

10

one night upon your breast, drunk with love and tenderness.

11

Desire trembled upon her thirsting lips.

12

Longing smiled within her fleeing gaze.

13

Her thirsty lips branded your lips with a kiss.

14

With her gaze she told the tales of longing for you.

15

Around your body, like an ivy branch, there wound

16

those burned arms in the yellow garden of the moon.

17

Every tale which you recited of love

18

into her ear she took to heart, and has forgotten none of them.

19

Alas, what remains of that night, that marvellous night?

20

That branch has withered, and that garden has died.

21

Although you have gone and forgotten me,

22

I still want you, and love you with my soul.

23

O man, O embodied deception, come, for once more

24

I shall press you to my breast full of fire.
