01

With a warm and joyful hope,

02

with an intoxicated, dream-filled gaze,

03

the young girl read a fairy tale,

04

at midnight, in a corner of solitude.

05

“Surely one day, from a distant road,

06

a proud prince will arrive.

07

Upon the paving stones of the city's streets will strike

08

the hooves of his wind-swift steed.

09

The flame of the sun will shine

10

above his beautiful crown.

11

The warp and weft of his robe are gold,

12

his breast concealed beneath strands of pearls and jewels.

13

At every moment, the wind carries with it, one way or another,

14

the feathers of his cap,

15

or, upon that radiant forehead,

16

a curl of his black hair.

17

People whisper into one another's ears,

18

‘Ah, with this pride and splendour and strength,

19

he is unique in the world.

20

Surely he is a prince of noble rank.’

21

Girls peer out from behind little windows,

22

their cheeks burning with the shyness of this encounter,

23

their breasts trembling and full of tumult,

24

throbbing with the excitement of the thought:

25

‘Perhaps he desires me.’

26

But it is as though the beautiful prince's eyes

27

do not see their longing eyes.

28

From this fragrant garden of flowers,

29

he does not pluck even a green leaf.

30

Still calm and untroubled,

31

he goes happily upon his own way.

32

Upon the paving stones of the city's streets strike

33

the hooves of his wind-swift steed.

34

His destination—the house of his beautiful beloved.

35

People quietly ask one another,

36

‘Who, then, is this fortunate girl?’

37

Suddenly, the sound at the door echoes through the house.

38

Toward the door, it is as though I spread wings of joy.

39

It is he—yes—it is he!

اوست

40

Ah, prince, beloved of my dreams,

41

at midnight I used to dream that you were coming.

42

Beneath his breath, like a child, he laughs softly.

43

With a warm and eager gaze,

44

he blocks the path of my gaze.

45

O your two eyes, a bright road toward the city of beauty,

46

O your gaze, wine within an enamelled cup,

47

ah, hurry, you whose lips are the colour of the blood of a lovely wild tulip.

48

The road is very long,

49

but at this road's end—a palace full of light.

50

Quietly, I set my foot in the stirrup of his mount.

51

I slip into the shadow of that breast and embrace.

52

I become entranced.

53

Still calmly and without anxiety,

54

upon the paving stones of the city's streets strike

55

the hooves of his wind-swift steed.

56

The flame of the sun shines

57

above his beautiful crown.

58

With him, I depart from this sorrowful city.

59

People, with astonished eyes,

60

say softly beneath their breath,

61

‘The fortunate girl…!’”
