01

At midnight, in the heart of the silent corridor,

02

a footstep rang out.

03

My heart, like the hearts of spring flowers—

04

I filled with the trembling dew of certainty.

05

I said, “It is he who has returned.”

06

I sprang up, and in the bewildered mirror

07

cast an eager glance upon myself.

08

Ah, my lips trembled with love.

09

The mirror's face grew dim with my sigh.

10

Perhaps it was gazing at an illusion:

11

my hair dishevelled and my lips dry,

12

my shoulder bare within my nightdress.

13

But in the darkness of the silent corridor,

14

the passerby kept hurrying along.

15

Suddenly my breath caught within my breast.

16

It was as though, through the windows, the spirit of the breeze

17

saw my lonely sorrow,

18

and poured upon my dishevelled hair

19

the burning fragrance of acacias.

20

Quickly and restlessly, I ran toward the door.

21

The footsteps within my breast

22

were like the resonance of a reed flute in the heart of the plain.

23

But in the darkness of the silent corridor,

24

the footsteps slipped away and passed.

25

The wind began a sorrowful song.
