01

The memory of the past remained within my heart, and alas,

02

there is no companion who remembers me.

03

My eyes remained fixed upon the road, and he sent no

04

letter to gladden my heart.

05

I do not know what wrong I committed

06

that he broke the thread of affection with me.

07

If I had a place within his heart,

08

why did he close his eyes to seeing me?

09

Wherever I look, once more it is he

10

who stares into my wet eyes.

11

It is the pain of love which, with longing and burning,

12

has overcome my heart full of sparks.

13

I said that, if I removed him from my eyes,

14

surely he would leave my heart sooner.

15

Death must come to my rescue,

16

or else it is a pain which goes away with difficulty.

17

Whenever lips glide upon my lips,

18

I sigh, “I wish this were he.

19

I wish these lips which kiss me

20

were the burning lips of that ill-tempered one.”

21

When they draw me into an embrace with affection,

22

I ask myself, “What became of his embrace?

23

What became of that burning fire which was

24

ablaze within his silent breath?”

25

I wrote poetry to lift from my heart

26

the heavy burden of the sorrow of his love.

27

My poetry itself became an image of his face.

28

To whom can I tell the cruelty of his love?

29

Mother, take this comb out of my hair.

30

Wipe the kohl from my eyes.

31

Take this dress off my body.

32

Life is nothing but my prison.

33

As long as his two eyes are not astonished by my face,

34

what use is this beauty to me?

35

Break this mirror, Mother.

36

What do I gain from adorning myself?

37

Close the door and say that I

38

have broken away from everyone except him.

39

If anyone says, “Why?” I have no fear.

40

Say openly that I am in love.

41

If a messenger arrives from a distant road,

42

quickly ask from whom the message comes.

43

If it is not from him, say that the woman

44

has not been in this dwelling for a long time.
