01

There is no companion to whom I can tell my secret.

02

I have hidden my lament within my instrument.

03

I am the harp of sorrow—for God's sake, a pluck,

04

a pluck, so that I may raise my voice.

05

I fastened a lock of silence upon my lips.

06

With a familiar key, open it.

07

The child of the heart is wounded by the hand of cruelty.

08

With the fingertips of faithfulness, caress it.

09

Fill this cup, O companion of my breath.

10

Fill this cup with his blood.

11

Make me drunk, so drunk that, from the passion of wine,

12

I may tell the tale of his enchantment.

13

Why do you ask me about the colour of his eyes?

14

When did the colour of his eyes bind me?

15

The fire which rose from his eyes

16

bound this maddened heart.

17

What mark of his lips do I carry upon my soul,

18

except the sparks of enchanting kisses?

19

What keepsake has remained upon my body,

20

except the pressure of iron arms?

21

What do I know of what his fingertips did

22

amid the harvest of my hair?

23

I know only that this disorder

24

has fallen into my hair for that reason.

25

He became a fire and seized my heart and soul.

26

He became a highwayman and barred the road of my faith.

27

The skirts of patience had slipped from my grasp.

28

When I fell from my feet, my sky grew overcast.

29

I was lost in the expanse of the desert of love,

30

in a night black like the face of my fortune.

31

Suddenly, without my being able to flee,

32

upon my head rained the rain of sin.

33

I was drunk, drunk with love and drunk with tenderness.

34

A man came and stole my stony heart.

35

He caused me so much pain, and I gave him pleasure.

36

He left—what do I know of who he was?

37

My intoxication left me, O companion of my breath.

38

Once more, fill this cup.

39

Give blood, the heart's blood of that selfish one,

40

so that I may bring this tale to its end.
