ADDITIONAL POEMS · POEM 13 OF 31
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Tonight, that long-standing longing of mine
02will come to its end in my beloved's embrace.
03Close the door and say the house is empty
04to anyone who comes to the door from now on.
05Where is the comb, so that my head and hair
06I may make tangled and wild and beautiful?
07With freshness and softness and grace,
08I must make my cheeks like the flower of a dream.
09Where is the kohl, so that when I draw it upon my eyes,
10it may give mystery and charm to my gaze?
11This longing which I have within my heart
12must give splendour to my dark eyes.
13What shall I wear so that, when he arrives,
14his thirst grows excessive and greater?
15What shall I say so that, from the magic of my words,
16he loses his heart to me and becomes enchanted?
17Ah, little servant girl,
18place flowers upon my head and breast,
19so that, astonished by the splendour of flowers,
20my long-standing lover may be tonight.
21When he comes through the door and sits silently,
22I shall pluck the strings of soul and heart and harp.
23With thirsty lips, two hundred kisses of longing
24I shall press upon the lips of rose-coloured wine.
25If the moon wishes, through the windows,
26to see me in his embrace, drunk and distraught,
27I shall appear with such splendour that, from envy,
28it draws a curtain of cloud over its own face.
29So that this scene of love may become like a dream,
30I shall pour frankincense and incense into the fire.
31Then, like a drunken gypsy,
32softly and sinuously, I shall rise from my place.
33All night, like a flame, I shall dance,
34until I fall from my feet and become entranced.
35When he draws me tightly into his embrace,
36I shall become drunk from that warmth of embrace.
37Ah, it is as though from beyond the windows,
38the soft sound of footsteps comes.
39O God, it is he, quietly and silently,
40coming toward our house.
