ADDITIONAL POEMS · POEM 16 OF 31
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01One long, sunlit day,
02in the boundless blue of the sea,
03the waves brought you to me,
04the waves, you, a solitary burden.
05Your eyes were the colour of water
06at the moment when I saw you in the water.
07In the estrangement of that shapeless world,
08it was as though I saw you in a dream.
09From you to me, silence and wonder;
10from me to you, a gaze and doubt.
11A bird called us from afar,
12called us to the green garden of the sun.
13Within us burned the sharp fever of a kiss.
14We were thirsty for the blood of passion.
15In the little boat of trembling waters,
16we were the playthings of fragrance and light.
17They beat, they beat within the sea,
18from the anxiety of drawing down,
19the waves, the impatient waves,
20in the rebellion of reaching one another.
21You stretched out your hands,
22like currents without an ending.
23Your lips, with the greeting of a kiss,
24were undone…
25For one moment, the whole sky
26I saw within a halo of crystal.
27Myself and you and life
28I saw within circles of light.
29It was as though the hot breeze of hell
30had wound amid my hair.
31Like a drop of burning gold,
32your love dripped upon my lips.
33Then, from the distant sea,
34the waves crept toward us.
35Without bringing me to myself,
36quietly, they drew you down.
37At that moment, I thought that a fragrance
38had seeped once more from the flower of dreams,
39or that the hand of my imagination had carved your body
40from the marble of waters.
41At that moment, I thought there was a secret
42within the lamentation and sobbing of the sea.
43Perhaps, to itself, it was calling me,
44in its own estrangement, the god of the sea.
