01

Do you remember how, laughing, you asked me

02

what gift from my journey I carry from this long road?

03

Look upon my face, so that it may answer you,

04

the tear of joy asleep within the eyes of longing.

05

What gift from my journey do I carry, O source of my life?

06

A breast burned in longing for an impossible love,

07

a gaze lost behind the curtain of a distant dream,

08

a body inflamed by the burning desire for union.

09

What gift from my journey do I carry… O source of my life?

10

Eyes filled with the turmoil of inward longing,

11

warm lips upon which, in the hope of desire, there sleeps

12

a kiss hotter than the kiss of the southern sun.

13

So often, in search of that gift worthy of you,

14

I wandered amid the alleys and the bazaar.

15

At last I went and said that, as a gift to you, I would give

16

a body within which hidden longing flames.

17

When I looked into the mirror, I saw, alas,

18

that separation from you had diminished the splendour of my face.

19

I reached for the sun's skirts, until it bestowed upon me

20

thirst and brightness and burning and radiance.

21

Now… this is me, this soul-burning fire is me.

22

O hope of the mad heart, comforter of sorrow,

23

open your arms, so that I may make plain to you

24

what gift from my journey I carry from this long road.
