01

At midnight, the cradles move quietly,

02

unaware of the painful migration of human beings.

03

Once more, a hand, like a trembling little boat,

04

draws me, rowing, into the mouth of storms.

05

Faces deeply unfamiliar within my gaze,

06

houses above which lie the tears of stars,

07

the terror of prison and the glitter of a chain's link,

08

tales of the grace of the one God,

09

the cold breast of the earth and the patches of graves,

10

each greeting the dark shadow of a farewell,

11

empty hands, and in a distant sky,

12

the yellowness of a sick, feverish sun.

13

An endless search and a mute struggle,

14

a dark road and feet weary upon the way,

15

no sign of fire upon the summits of Sinai,

16

no answer from beyond this closed door.

17

I sit, staring into the eyes of darkness.

18

Could I be separate from this form for a moment,

19

wind like a cry within the heart of the world,

20

and for a few days, I, the rebellious one, be God?

21

If I were God, God, from this divinity,

22

when would only a name of mine remain in the world?

23

I would turn my back upon this jewelled throne.

24

My court would be the silent solitude of hearts.

25

If I were God, God, for a moment from myself,

26

I would break away, break away, go far.

27

Upon the ruined roads of this old world,

28

without a robe and without a staff of light, I would go.

29

Fear of me would cast no shadow within hearts.

30

I would not promise hell to rebels.

31

Either I would shorten the road to the garden of Iram,

32

or within this world give birth to a new paradise.

33

If I were God, this flame of rebellion

34

would no longer burn only me, all of me.

35

Suddenly, it would put its head out of the prison of my body,

36

advance, and burn my world.

37

I would give breasts the power to cry out.

38

I myself would cry out within the breasts.

39

My existence would spread within existence,

40

ashamed whenever I remembered divinity.

41

My fists, these two hard and restless fists,

42

would no longer strike walls in vain.

43

I would strike the crown of the world with my fist so hard

44

that existence would die within the bodies of walls.

45

I would make my home among the people of earth.

46

I myself would recite my secret to them.

47

I would sit with the company of wine-drinkers.

48

At night, in the alleys, I would sing.

49

The candle of wine would burn in my solitude until dawn.

50

Drunk from it, I would deliberate upon affairs.

51

I would tear the garment of abstinence upon my body.

52

I would purify myself within the winecup.

53

I would release these troubled people,

54

so that, for a moment, they might rest from the terror of hell,

55

drink a sip of the wine of existence,

56

and adorn themselves with the ornament of intoxication.

57

I would be the melody of a harp in the chambers of night.

58

I would be the spark of love, the breasts my dwelling.

59

Mosque and tavern, this ruined monastery,

60

would roar from the bright strokes of my feet.

61

I would be the message of union within a playful gaze.

62

I would be the greeting of affection upon the lips of a cup.

63

I would be the wine of a kiss in the night of intoxication.

64

I would be love from head to toe, pleasure, pleasure.

65

From time to time, within my own dwelling,

66

I would put my ear to the cries of my destitute people,

67

to see if there were a remedy for their pains,

68

or what they wanted from their God.

69

If I were God, my messenger would be my pure name.

70

This splendour would come from my torn garments.

71

Love would be my sword, and intoxication my book.

72

Wine would be my earth, yes, wine would be my earth.

73

Ah, alas, a moment has come when my lips

74

are deeply silent, and upon them there is no word.

75

I want to bid you farewell until a distant time,

76

for I no longer have any desire to greet you.

77

For these divinities do not befit the powerless.

78

What have I to do with separations from this earthen body?

79

What have I to do with suddenly taking flight from this world, this ominous killing ground,

80

with flights and releases?

81

I sit, staring into the eyes of darkness.

82

Night pours through the opening onto my pillow.

83

Ah, even beyond the walls of the divine throne,

84

I see nothing but darkness, nothing.

85

O God, O mysterious, death-laden smile,

86

my laments, alas, are strangers to you.

87

I deny you, reject you, rebel against you.

88

To spite you, this Satan is my God.
