01

Upon my lips, the shadow of a mysterious question.

02

Within my heart, a restless, existence-burning pain.

03

The secret of this rebellious spirit's wandering

04

I want to share with you today.

05

Though you drive me from your threshold, yet,

06

as long as I am your servant here and you are God there,

07

my dark story is not a story

08

from whose beginning and ending you can be separate.

09

At midnight, the cradles move quietly,

10

unaware of the painful migration of human beings.

11

A mysterious hand, like a trembling little boat,

12

draws me, rowing, into the mouth of storms.

13

Faces deeply unfamiliar within my gaze,

14

houses above which lie the tears of stars,

15

the terror of prison and the glitter of a chain's link,

16

tales of the grace of the one God,

17

the cold breast of the earth and the patches of graves,

18

each greeting the dark shadow of a farewell,

19

empty hands, and in a distant sky,

20

the yellowness of a sick, feverish sun.

21

An endless search and a mute struggle,

22

a dark road and feet weary upon the way,

23

no sign of fire upon the summits of Sinai,

24

no answer from beyond this closed door.

25

Ah… does my lament find its way into you,

26

so that you strike your cup of self-worship against a stone,

27

sit for a time with me, with me of earth,

28

and drink the pain of existence from the lips of my poetry?

29

For years I grew cold within myself, but today,

30

like a flame I rise to burn your harvest,

31

so that either you silence my impatient roar,

32

or I teach you another way.

33

I know you drive me from your threshold, but,

34

as long as I am your servant here and you are God there,

35

my dark story is not a story

36

from whose beginning and ending you can be separate.

37

What am I, born of a pleasure-seeking evening?

38

An unknown one drives me forward upon this road.

39

Once, a body wound around a body.

40

I came into the world without myself wanting it.

41

When have you released me, so that with two open eyes

42

I might choose a form for myself,

43

so that I might give whomever I wished the name of mother,

44

and freely set my own feet upon the road?

45

I came into the world so that, within your world,

46

I might be the outcome of the burning union of two bodies.

47

Before that, when were we acquainted with one another?

48

I came into the world without being myself.

49

The days passed, and into the eyes there poured blackness,

50

the darkness of your blind, long-enduring nights.

51

The days passed, and that sound of a lullaby

52

died, and my ears filled with your voice.

53

Childhood, like swallows with colourful wings,

54

took flight toward other skies.

55

The seed of thought stirred within my mind.

56

An unexpected guest knocked upon the door.

57

I ran through uncanny deserts.

58

I sat intoxicated beside springs.

59

I broke the branches of mystery, but

60

from the body of this bush, a branch grew at every moment.

61

My road went to the far reaches of the plains.

62

I floated in the river of my own thoughts.

63

I crept into the heart of wandering waves.

64

I broke the bond of darkness from my own feet.

65

At last, one day, quietly I asked myself,

66

“What am I? Where do I begin?

67

If I am the warm light of life from head to toe,

68

from which sky of mystery do I shine?

69

Why do I think in this way, silently, day and night?

70

Who has scattered the seed of thought within me?

71

A harp is in my hand, and I am a proud harpist,

72

or has someone settled this harp upon my lap?

73

If I did not exist, or were in another world,

74

would there still be the power of thought?

75

Would I still be able to find a way

76

into the riddles of this mysterious world?”

77

Fearfully, in pursuit of that mysterious answer,

78

I set my head upon a dark and winding road.

79

You cast a shadow upon that ending, and I understood:

80

from head to toe I am nothing, nothing, nothing.

81

You cast a shadow upon that ending, and within your hand

82

there was a rope, its other end about the necks.

83

You drew the people along the narrow path of life,

84

their eyes fixed upon the image of that other world.

85

You drew the people upon the road, and called,

86

“May the fire of hell be the portion of unbelievers.

87

Whoever chooses Satan in my place,

88

may the fire of hell burn fiercely within their soul.”

89

I saw myself as a mirror empty of myself.

90

At every moment, an image fell within it from your hand,

91

sometimes the image of your power, sometimes your injustice,

92

sometimes the image of your self-worshipping eyes.

93

A sheep wandering amid the flock,

94

the one who is the shepherd has opened the way to the wolf.

95

The one who is the shepherd is himself drunk with this game,

96

wine-struck, resting quietly in a corner.

97

You drew the people upon the road, and called,

98

“May the fire of hell be the portion of unbelievers.

99

Whoever chooses Satan in my place,

100

may the fire of hell burn fiercely within their soul.”

101

You yourself created this accursed Satan.

102

You made him rebellious and drove him toward us.

103

It was you, it was you, who from a single flame

104

made such a demon and set him upon the road.

105

You gave him time, for as long as the world remains,

106

to kindle fire with his ominous fingertips,

107

to become a wild pleasure within a silent bed,

108

to become a kiss upon lips which burn with thirst.

109

Everything beautiful you mercilessly bestowed upon him.

110

He became poetry, became a cry, became love and youth,

111

became the fragrance of flowers, scattered upon the plains,

112

became the colour of the world, became the deception of life,

113

became a wave upon the billowing skirts of dancers,

114

became the fire of wine, came to a boil within the vat.

115

He stirred such a tumult within the souls of wine-drinkers

116

that from every ruin came the cry, “Drink, drink.”

117

He became a melody, wound upon himself beneath a harpist's fingers,

118

became a tremor, fell upon silvery breasts,

119

became laughter, revealed the teeth of moon-faced beauties,

120

became the cupbearer's reflection, fell into an overturned cup.

121

The magic of his voice, within these dark nights,

122

became the guide of those lost upon the road in the desert.

123

The sound of his feet danced within the hearts of sanctuaries.

124

The flash of his eyes became the lamp of travellers.

125

Everything beautiful you mercilessly bestowed upon him.

126

You released him upon the road of worshippers of beauty.

127

Then, with the cries of your anger and displeasure,

128

you filled our enamelled dome with sound.

129

Our eyes brimful of that enchanting image,

130

we fell at your feet upon the road of prostration.

131

Continually, within our sight, there takes on the colour of blood

132

the dark story of your people of Thamud.

133

You yourself sat until he overcame them, then,

134

like a plant, you withered them with a storm.

135

The gale of your anger came upon the people of Lot.

136

You burned them, burned them with searing lightning.

137

Alas for this game, this pain-filled game.

138

Why do you make us playthings in this way?

139

We are the prayer beads, and within your hand we turn.

140

Ardently you turn us, and in vain you charge ahead.

141

When our eyes met the two eyes of life,

142

we became acquainted with transgression, this vague word.

143

You created transgression; it stirred of itself,

144

rushed upon us; at last we became transgression itself.

145

If you were with us, and your grace were with us,

146

would Satan ever have affection for us or a path to us?

147

Would there ever, within this rebellious, insurgent spirit,

148

be a sign of him or the sound of his footstep?

149

Continually you draw me and us into the pit,

150

to say you can be like this,

151

so that I and we may be the manifestation of your power,

152

so that above our heads you may be a cold, iron hammer.

153

What is this Satan, driven from thresholds,

154

remaining a guest within our silent dwelling?

155

Upon the ether of his burning body, a hand

156

has scattered the fragrance of the world's pleasures.

157

What is he but what you wanted him to be:

158

a dark spirit, a dark soul, a dark vision,

159

a dark smile upon those unsmiling lips,

160

a dark beginning, God, a dark ending?

161

When is his desire the cause of this bitter existence?

162

When did you ask his opinion about his task?

163

If you had released him to be himself,

164

you would never have seen a trace of him in the world.

165

So many nights he came into my sleep,

166

his eyes springs of tears and blood.

167

He lamented fiercely, and I saw that upon his lips,

168

his laments were empty of the colour of enchantment.

169

Ashamed of this disgraced, shame-stained name,

170

he sought a corner to be released from himself.

171

His body was the colour of vileness, and, weeping,

172

he wanted a power to be separate from himself.

173

So many nights he spoke with me.

174

It is as though my ear is still full of lament.

175

Satan: “Spit upon this existence, this pain-filled existence.

176

Spit upon this existence which is so hateful.

177

He is my creator, and to the people's ears, at every moment,

178

why does he say I was like that, should be like this?

179

If I am cunning Satan, what is my sin?

180

He does not want me to be anything but this.

181

His hell burned in desire for a prey.

182

He gave me a hunter's snare and tamed me,

183

so that I might cast thousands of prey into the trap; suddenly,

184

he filled a world with the roar of my name.

185

His hell burned in desire for a prey.

186

His angels of torment waited upright,

187

fiery spears and tents of smoke,

188

thirsty for his countless victims.

189

The bitter fruit of the wild tree of Zaqqum

190

still lay fruitless upon the branches.

191

That wine steeped in the boiling water of hell

192

had cast no fresh spark within anyone's heart.

193

His hell was empty of the cries of pain.

194

His hell shone and flared in vain.

195

To give this futility another colour,

196

he taught me the art of deceiving the people.

197

What am I? An unfortunate one whose feet

198

are wound in the bonds of a dark destiny.

199

O my disciples, O those lost upon the road,

200

he has chosen our road, carefully weighed it.

201

O my disciples, O those lost upon the road,

202

the road is not a road by which to seek a way to him.

203

How long do you strive in search of a road?

204

The road is unseen; we ourselves are travellers toward him.

205

O my disciples, O his curse upon us,

206

O my disciples, O our cries from him,

207

O all his injustice, his injustice toward us,

208

O all our happy laughter from him.

209

We are not a sea, to become our own wave.

210

We are not a storm, to be our own anger.

211

We, who have fallen fruitlessly from his eyes,

212

why do we strive to be our own eyes?

213

We are not an embrace, to burn from ourselves.

214

We are not a song, to tremble from ourselves.

215

We are not ourselves, for sin to be upon us.

216

We are not him, to fear ourselves.

217

If we went without falling into the snare,

218

he would spread his snare with a fresh deception.

219

For his feverish, burning hell,

220

he cultivated fresh prey at every moment.

221

O my disciples, O those lost upon the road,

222

I myself am weary of this shame-stained name.

223

Though he has tried to put me to sleep,

224

I, who am Satan, alas, am deeply awake.”

225

So many nights, with him, in that darkness,

226

I shed tears, shed tears continually.

227

So many nights, the lips of Satan,

228

when he could speak no longer, I kissed quietly.

229

So many nights, upon that wrinkled face,

230

my hands descended with caresses.

231

So many nights, when his voice rose,

232

my knees, without hesitation, came to prostration.

233

So many nights, from that red robe,

234

he wished to be outside for a moment,

235

wished to become the spirit of purity,

236

not the god of half the base world.

237

O Lord, what is the outcome of this self-worship?

238

We ourselves are fallen, lamenting, destitute.

239

We, who in every deed and every thought,

240

see no mark of a hand, no mark of magic, but your mark.

241

You made the earthly world, and you know

242

that from head to toe it is nothing but a mirage, nothing but deception.

243

We are dolls, and your hands are at play.

244

Our unbelief, our rebellion, is no strange thing.

245

You said, “Give thanks”; we gave thanks to you.

246

But how long must we continue to give you thanks?

247

You bar the road and laugh at those who travel it.

248

Where are you, where, so that we may seek a way into you?

249

We, who like wax take shape within your hand,

250

what, then, is the tale of the Day of Resurrection?

251

Why, then, do we burn fiercely within the mouth of hell?

252

What is this bitter torment and this pain of remorse?

253

This world itself has become a deeply burning hell,

254

fire throughout, cries of pain from head to toe,

255

then fetters and heated chains upon the feet,

256

from the dust of bodies rising a cold smoke,

257

the dry and the wet together burning amid flames,

258

the robed ascetic and the tavern-haunting libertine,
