01

An uninvited guest,

02

driven from every threshold, utterly exhausted,

03

has arrived at midnight from the road, weary of body, dust-covered,

04

and laid his head upon the colourful breast of cushions

05

upon which, in years gone by,

06

every night until dawn, with soft threads of silk, I embroidered

07

thousands of dreamlike patterns within my own imagination.

08

And when my hot and heavy eyelids fell silently together,

09

a green plant grew within the marsh of my sweet dreams.

10

From the plain of the sky, it was as though a dust of light rose.

11

The flower of the sun hung upon my musky hair.

12

The warm breeze of a hand softly slipped a ring

13

onto my silvery finger.

14

Burning lips kissed my lips eagerly,

15

and a man quietly, with me, laid his head upon the silent breast

16

of my colourful cushions.

17

Now the uninvited guest,

18

driven from every threshold, utterly exhausted,

19

presses his warm, sleeping eyes upon them.

20

Ah, upon myself I must

21

bear the bitterness of the poison of his reproach.

22

And, drunk from cups of wine, he calls, “Is there still

23

wine within the tavern of your sweet lips,

24

or, for a weary traveller,

25

in the heart of this silent, fragrant, beautiful cottage,

26

a place to sleep?”
