01

I close these two eyes full of fire,

02

so they will not gaze into his two eyes,

03

so my heart will not grow fevered and flutter

04

from the flame of his troubled gaze.

05

I close these two eyes full of fire,

06

so I may pass beyond the valley of disgrace,

07

so my silent heart will not cry out;

08

I turn toward solitude and being alone.

09

O weary travellers, what do you seek

10

of his condition in this cold dusk?

11

He is the sun’s fugitive flame;

12

you run after him in vain.

13

He is the blossoming bud of moonlight;

14

he must scatter waves of light

15

upon the meadow of a night-stricken eye

16

that calls him to the bedchamber of sin.

17

The fragrance of his silent kiss must

18

mingle with moans of longing;

19

into that enchantress’s tresses

20

he must pour love and desire like a madman.

21

He must drink the wine of kisses

22

from the cup of alluring lips,

23

lay down his head, intoxicated, and rest

24

against the support of a beautiful breast.

25

O desire thirsting around him,

26

why do you weave the thread of life in vain?

27

A day will come when, weary and spent,

28

you will laugh at this futile striving.

29

I set fire to the harvest of your hopes

30

with flames of yearning and disappointment.

31

O sinful heart that seeks turmoil,

32

perhaps you may rest a moment from turmoil.

33

I bind you with the heavy bonds of sorrow,

34

so you will no longer fly toward him.

35

O bird of the heart, weary and restless,

36

keep company with his sorrow, keep company.
