01

No one is thinking of the flowers.

02

No one is thinking of the fish.

03

No one wants

04

to believe that the little garden is dying,

05

that the garden's heart has swollen beneath the sun,

06

that the garden's mind is slowly, slowly

07

becoming empty of green memories.

08

And the garden's feeling seems

09

to be an abstract thing which has rotted in the garden's solitude.

10

Our house's courtyard is alone.

11

Our house's courtyard,

12

waiting for the rain of an unknown cloud,

13

yawns.

14

And our house's pool is empty.

15

Little, inexperienced stars

16

fall from the heights of the trees to the earth.

17

And from among the pale windows of the fishes' house,

18

at night comes the sound of coughing.

19

Our house's courtyard is alone.

20

Father says,

21

“It is past my time.

22

It is past my time.

23

I have carried my burden,

24

and done my work.”

25

And within his room, from morning until dusk,

26

he reads either the Shahnameh,

27

or Nasekh al-Tavarikh.

28

Father says to Mother,

29

“A curse upon every fish and every bird.

30

When I die, then

31

what difference does it make if there is a garden,

32

or if there is no garden?

33

My retirement pension is enough for me.”

34

Mother's whole life

35

is a prayer mat spread

36

upon the threshold of the terror of hell.

37

Mother, always at the bottom of everything,

38

searches for the footprint of a sin,

39

and thinks that a plant's unbelief has made the garden

40

unclean.

41

Mother prays all day.

42

Mother is a natural sinner,

43

and blows upon all the flowers,

44

and blows upon all the fish,

45

and blows upon herself.

46

Mother waits for an appearance,

47

and a forgiveness which will descend.

48

My brother calls the garden a cemetery.

49

My brother laughs at the disorder of the grasses,

50

and from the corpses of the fish,

51

which beneath the sick skin of the water

52

turn into rotten particles,

53

he takes a tally.

54

My brother is addicted to philosophy.

55

My brother sees the garden's cure

56

in the destruction of the garden.

57

He gets drunk,

58

and punches the doors and walls,

59

and tries to say

60

that he is deeply suffering and weary and despairing.

61

Even his despair,

62

like his identity document and calendar and handkerchief and lighter and pen,

63

he carries with him into the alleys and the bazaar.

64

And his despair

65

is so small that every night

66

it is lost in the crowd of the tavern.

67

And my sister, who was a friend of the flowers,

68

and the simple words of her heart,

69

when Mother struck her,

70

carried to their kindly and silent gathering,

71

and from time to time invited the family of fish

72

to sunshine and sweets…

73

Her house is on the other side of the city.

74

Within her artificial house,

75

with her artificial red fish,

76

and within the shelter of the love of her artificial husband,

77

and beneath the branches of artificial apple trees,

78

she sings artificial songs,

79

and makes natural children.

80

She,

او

81

whenever she comes to visit us,

82

and the corners of her skirts become stained by the poverty of the garden,

83

takes a bath in eau de cologne.

84

She,

او

85

whenever she comes to visit us,

86

is pregnant.

87

Our house's courtyard is alone.

88

Our house's courtyard is alone.

89

All day,

90

from behind the door comes the sound of being torn into pieces,

91

and of exploding.

92

All our neighbours, in the earth of their little gardens, instead of flowers,

93

plant mortars and machine guns.

94

All our neighbours, upon their tiled pools,

95

place covers.

96

And the tiled pools,

97

without themselves wanting it,

98

are secret storehouses of gunpowder.

99

And the children of our alley have their schoolbags,

100

with little bombs,

101

filled.

102

Our house's courtyard is bewildered.

103

I am afraid of a time

104

which has lost its own heart.

105

I am afraid of imagining the futility of all these hands,

106

and of picturing the estrangement of all these faces.

107

I am alone like a schoolchild

108

who loves the geometry lesson

109

madly.

110

And I think that the garden can be taken to the hospital.

111

I think…

112

I think…

113

I think…

114

And the garden's heart has swollen beneath the sun,

115

and the garden's mind is slowly, slowly

116

becoming empty of green memories.
