01

I wish that on the shore of a silent river

02

I were the mysterious fragrance of a plant.

03

Whenever you happened to pass there,

04

I would brush my lips against you from head to toe.

05

I wish I sang like the shepherd's reed flute,

06

to the melody of your maddened heart.

07

Lying upon the breeze's billowing litter,

08

I would pass by the door of your house.

09

I wish, like a ray of spring sunlight,

10

I shone through the window at dawn.

11

From behind the trembling curtain of silk,

12

I would see the colour of your eyes.

13

I wish that in your radiant gathering

14

I were the laughter of a cup of wine.

15

I wish that in a midnight filled with pain

16

I were the languor and intoxication of sleep.

17

I wish, like a mirror, my heart grew bright

18

with your image and your laughter.

19

In the mornings, upon my body would glide

20

the warmth of your caressing hand.

21

I wish that, like an autumn leaf, my dance

22

were watched by the moon at midnight.

23

Within the little garden of your house,

24

my passion… would raise a tumult.

25

I wish, like the enchanting memory of a woman,

26

I crept into your heart, full of anxiety.

27

Suddenly I would see your eyes

28

fixed upon the manifestation of my own beauty.

29

I wish that in the bed of your solitude

30

my body lit the candle of sin.

31

The roots of your piety and of my longing

32

would burn from this sweet sinfulness.

33

I wish, from the green branch of life,

34

you plucked the flower of my sorrow.

35

I wish that in my poetry, O source of my life,

36

you saw the flame of my secret.
