01

I am glad that I burn in your sparks.

02

I am glad that I weep in the thought of you.

03

I am glad that, after our union, once more in this way

04

I weep in your undying love.

05

You thought that, when I broke away from you,

06

I no longer carried the thought of you in my head.

07

But what can I tell you? Apart from this fire,

08

there is no other spark upon my soul.

09

At night, when beside the palm grove

10

the Karun roars with its own suffering,

11

it is as though my cries of longing

12

are heard from the weary waves.

13

Sit for a moment upon its shore at night,

14

so that you may see my suffering made plain.

15

Look for a moment at your shadow at night,

16

so that you may see my restless spirit.

17

With the cold lips of the morning breeze,

18

I begin a song for you.

19

I am that star who shines

20

every night in the sky above your dwelling.

21

It does not matter if the bodies of deserts

22

have raised a hard wall between you and me.

23

I am that dove who, in solitude,

24

takes wing over the breadth of the seas.

25

I am glad that, like a dry branch, once more

26

I burn within the flames of your anger.

27

It is as though I am still that feverish body,

28

for I burn from the sunlight of your city.

29

How could the memory of you die within my heart?

30

Your memory is the memory of first love.

31

Your memory is that enchanting autumn,

32

which has a thousand colourful manifestations.

33

Let the ascetics with their blackened skirts

34

call me the disgrace of the street and the gathering.

35

Let them stain my name with shame,

36

these people who are creatures of Satan.

37

But I am that blossom of sorrow

38

who grows from the branches of your memory.

39

At night, in a corner of solitude,

40

I seek you within the familiar memory of you.
