01

Why do you look toward me any longer,

02

when you are seated beside my rival?

03

I am astonished that, after all those deceptions,

04

you too have settled down to deceive me.

05

With my own eyes that night, O God, I saw

06

you touch your cup to someone else's cup.

07

When Hafez's divination was opened among us,

08

you cast your own fortune in someone else's name.

09

Go… go… toward her; what sorrow is that to me?

10

You are the sun… she is the earth… I am the sky.

11

Shine upon her, for I have settled

12

gracefully upon the shoulders of the stars.

13

Shine upon her, for in all this,

14

my heart weeps for her condition.

15

Such acts of renunciation are the perfection of love.

16

Your heart belongs to me; your body belongs to her.

17

You who have drawn me behind veils,

18

how have you not found the way to my secret?

19

I renounced your body, for in this world

20

no body was the destination of my longing.

21

If I have run toward you in this way,

22

I am in love with love, not with union with you.

23

In the darkness of my lightless nights,

24

the thought of love is sweeter than the thought of you.

25

Now that you are seated beside her,

26

you, the wine, and the fortune of union with her,

27

the past has gone, and that tale has grown old.

28

Your body remains, and her undying love.
