01

The night was dark, the road long, and I bewildered.

02

He held a lantern upon my path.

03

Upon the lantern's restless flame,

04

my terrified gaze ran.

05

What happened to us? Who can know,

06

in the bed of the damp-skirted grasses?

07

It was as though his lips hung about my neck

08

the diamonds of a thousand burning kisses.

09

What happened to us? Who can know?

10

I became him… he, the roar of seas.

11

I, the wild bush of a warm desire;

12

he, the whisper of the breezes of the wilderness.

13

Thirsty within his arms,

14

I grew like grass from longing,

15

until the fragrance of trembling blossoms

16

I drank within the cup of the blossoming night.

17

A rain of stars fell upon my hair

18

from the branch of the solitary tree of silence.

19

In the bed of the damp-skirted grasses,

20

I remained with the flames of an embrace.

21

I am afraid of this reckless breeze.

22

If it clings to my body in this way,

23

I fear that, from my body, amid the crowd,

24

the fragrance of crushed grass will rise.
