01

At night upon the damp road,

02

it is as though our shadows flee from us.

03

Far from us, upon the slope of the road,

04

in the ominous haze of moonlight that glides,

05

cold and heavy, above the branches of the vine,

06

they move softly toward one another.

07

At night upon the damp road,

08

in the silence of the fragrant earth,

09

impatiently, at times, they cling to one another,

10

our shadows…

11

like flowers drunk on the wine of last night's dew.

12

It is as though, in their bitter flight from us,

13

the songs that we never sing,

14

the songs that we angrily

15

kill within the silence of our breasts,

16

they sing eagerly beneath their breath.

17

But far from the shadows,

18

unaware of the tale of their attachments,

19

of their separations and their unions,

20

our weary bodies, within their own stagnation,

21

give shape to life.

22

At night upon the damp road,

23

so often I have asked myself:

24

does life take on colour within our shadows,

25

or are we ourselves the shadows of our own shadows?

26

Like a night-blind creature,

27

I flee from light, day and night,

28

so that my shadow may not fall upon the earth.

29

Within my dark room, with trembling fingers,

30

I close the way to the openings.

31

I creep alone into a corner.

32

O thousands of wandering spirits,

33

gliding around me in the waves of darkness,

34

where is my shadow?

35

The light of terror shines in the crystal of my silent cry.

36

Where is my shadow?

37

Where is my shadow?

38

Like a dream, it grows slowly within my body.

39

I seek my lost self within myself.

40

Its hand, like a dark mist,

41

creeps into the cold warp and weft of my veins.

42

Within the darkness, there takes on colour

43

the design of my voice.

44

I ask you,

45

O God… O shadow of ambiguity,

46

why, then, does it not smile upon me,

47

that dark, terrifying night without an end?

48

Why, in the mirror of the sea,

49

does the image of your sun glide at dawn?

50

Why, upon the shoulder of the wilderness at night,

51

does the hair of your moonlight dance once more?

52

I ask you,

53

O God, O everlasting darkness,

54

in what terrifying grave

55

will it at last fall silent,

56

the laughter of the sun?

57

I do not want

58

to separate my shadow from myself for a moment.

59

I do not want

60

it to glide far from me upon the pathways,

61

or to fall, weary and heavy,

62

beneath the feet of passersby.

63

Why must it, upon the road of its own searching,

64

come face to face

65

with the closed lips of doors?

66

Why must it rub its body

67

against the doors and walls of every house?

68

Why must it, out of despair,

69

set foot in a cold and foreign land?

70

Ah… O sun,

71

my everlasting curse upon you.

72

Alas, the nectar of your light does not fill the cup of my soul.

73

To whom can I tell the story of my hidden pain?

74

Why do you take my shadow far from me?

75

Why, far from it, amid the brightness,

76

do you set me upon the road to the grave?

77

If within your breast a treasure of light lies hidden,

78

sever the bond of darkness from the souls of our shadows.

79

Melt the chains of our bodies at its feet,

80

or erase it beneath our feet.

81

Ah… O sun,

82

my everlasting curse upon you.

83

Whenever I turned my face toward you,

84

though within your seven colours

85

my eyes grew more dazzled,

86

yet at my feet

87

you made my shadow darker.

88

I ask you,

89

O God… O endless mystery,

90

what is the shadow upon a grave?

91

A fragrance that has seeped from the petals of terrors?

92

A bush that has grown from a dark seed?

93

A lightless tear that, in the prison of a hard body,

94

has slipped from the weary gaze of a restless prisoner?

95

I ask you:

96

is darkness pain or happiness?

97

Is the body a prison or a wilderness of freedom?

98

What is the darkness of night?

99

Night, O Lord,

100

is the shadow of whose black soul?

101

Ah, I am overflowing

102

with thousands of silent questions.

103

A mysterious cry secretly winds into my ear:

104

“This dark night

105

is the shadow of God's soul,

106

the shadow of a soul that easily carries upon its shoulders

107

the suffering of its servants whose days are dark.”

108

Ah…

109

what does it say?

110

What does it say?

111

Weary, bewildered, and perplexed,

112

it runs along the road of endless questions.
