01

Into the eyes of the weary day has crept

02

the mute and dark dream of a sleep.

03

Now once more, along this road, you must

04

hurry home alone.

05

As long as your black shadow, in this way,

06

remains continually beside you,

07

never imagine that, over there,

08

an eye is waiting for you.

09

Your house sits like a grave

10

within a cloud of the trees' dust.

11

Upon its head, as yesterday, it has placed a crown

12

of the silver threads of rain.

13

From the silent and dark corners,

14

when the door opens before you,

15

hundreds of silent, mysterious greetings

16

take wing wearily toward you.

17

It is as though the heart of darkness beats

18

within that little, sorrowful room.

19

Night creeps like a black snake

20

over the thin, colourful curtains.

21

The clock upon the breast of the wall,

22

empty of a stroke, of a sound,

23

within a mass of silence and stillness,

24

is itself a piece of space.

25

Within the old picture frames,

26

these ridiculous, mortal faces,

27

colourless from the passage of time,

28

perhaps once existed!

29

The mirror, like a large eye,

30

sits on one side, absorbed in watching.

31

Upon the panes of its gaze,

32

it has settled the rebellious spirit of night.

33

You, weary like an old bird,

34

turn toward the warmth of the bed.

35

With trembling, closed eyelids,

36

you lay your head upon the breast of the notebook.

37

It is as though, beside you, there weep

38

the spirits of the dead of the past,

39

those who slept upon this bed

40

before you, in times gone by.

41

From them, a thousand silent movements;

42

from them, a thousand restless laments,

43

like fleeing bubbles

44

upon the compressed face of the marsh.

45

The ancient pine has become filled

46

with the ominous cawing of crows.

47

Upon the windows, once more, there dances

48

the fragrant silk of rain.

49

You feel that it would be a pity

50

if you struggled against your pain.

51

You breathe the scent of that blossom of sorrow,

52

so that you may write a new poem.
