01

There, upon the summit of the mountain,

02

my two feet weary from the pain of running,

03

I told myself that, at this height at last,

04

God would hear my voice.

05

Toward the dark clouds, there took wing

06

my bright and hopeful gaze.

07

From my heart I cried, “O Lord,

08

I love him, I love him.”

09

My voice went into the depths of darkness,

10

and disturbed the ominous sleep of the stars.

11

Dust-covered and restless, it knocked

12

upon the golden door of the palace of heaven.

13

The angels, with thousands of little hands,

14

drew back the hard and heavy bolt.

15

Trembling from the storm of my impatient voice,

16

they crept into a cloud.

17

The columns were like snakes, twisted upon themselves;

18

the trees floated within a green mist.

19

My voice washed its body clean

20

of the dust of the road within the pool of Kawthar.

21

God was within his dream-laden sleep,

22

his gaze concealed beneath his eyelids.

23

My voice went and lamented in sorrow

24

amid the curtains of his bedchamber.

25

But those silver-coated eyelids,

26

alas, remained closed until dawn.

27

Lightly, like seashells upon the shore,

28

they rested upon his eyes.

29

A hundred times, the voice rose in despair,

30

to rebel and attack him.

31

The voice wanted, with the fingers of anger,

32

to tear apart the silk of his sleep.

33

The voice cried out in pain,

34

“When will this golden sleep be shattered?

35

Here I am, thirsty for one sip of affection,

36

while there you sleep upon the throne of divinity.”

37

But how high can it rise,

38

a voice so full of pain and anguish?

39

When the new morning came along once more,

40

my voice was empty of voice.

41

But here, toward the heavens,

42

my hopeful eyes are still turned.

43

God, do you recognize the voice?

44

I love him, I love him.
