Why do you flee from me?

چه گریزیت ز من ؟

Why do you hurry along the road?

چه شتابیت به راه ؟

In what will you seek

به چه خواهی بردن

refuge on a night so dark?

در شبی این همه تاریک پناه ؟

The marble stair of that ivory chamber—

مرمرین پله آن غرفه عاج

alas, it is so far from us.

ای دریغا که زما بس دور است

Seize the moments.

لحظه ها را دریاب

Tomorrow's eyes are blind.

چشم فردا کور است

There is no lamp at that journey's end.

نه چراغیست در آن پایان

Whatever appears from afar—

هر چه از دور نمایانست

perhaps that luminous point

شاید آن نقطه نورانی

is the eyes of wolves in the wilderness.

چشم گرگان بیابانست

Wine remains within the cup.

می فرومانده به جام

How long will you lay your head upon the prayer mat?

سر به سجاده نهادن تا کی ؟

He is hidden here;

او در اینجاست نهان

he shines within the wine.

می درخشد در می

If we cling to one another,

گر بهم آویزیم

we two bewildered, lonely ones, like a wave,

ما دو سرگشته تنها چون موج

we shall reach the refuge you seek

به پناهی که تو می جویی خواهیم رسید

within that magical moment of ascent!

اندر آن لحظه جادویی اوج !
