01

At last the line of the road came to an end.

02

I arrived by the dust-covered road.

03

My gaze raced ahead of me.

04

Upon my lips was a warm greeting.

05

The city boiled within the furnace of noon.

06

The alley burned in the fever of the sun.

07

My feet, upon the silent paving stones,

08

advanced and trembled violently.

09

The houses were another colour,

10

dust-covered, dark, and melancholy.

11

The faces amid the chadors

12

were like spirits with their feet in chains.

13

The dried-up stream, like a blind eye,

14

was empty of water and of a trace of him.

15

A man passed along the road, singing.

16

My ear became filled with his song.

17

The familiar dome of the old mosque

18

resembled broken bowls.

19

A believer upon the minaret

20

sang the call to prayer in a sorrowful voice.

21

Running after the dogs

22

were barefoot children, stones in hand.

23

A woman laughed from behind a lattice.

24

Suddenly the wind closed a little window.

25

From the black mouths of entrance halls

26

came the damp smell of a grave.

27

A blind man went, tapping with his cane.

28

Someone familiar approached from afar.

29

There, a door opened silently.

30

Hands beckoned me toward them.

31

A tear rained from the cloud of eyes.

32

Hands drove me away from them.

33

Upon the wall, once more, the old ivy

34

billowed like a trembling spring.

35

Upon the bodies of its dense leaves

36

were the green of age and the dust of time.

37

My gaze, searching, asked,

38

“In what place is there a trace of him?”

39

But I saw that my little room

40

was empty of his childish voice.

41

From the cold earth of the mirror,

42

suddenly his body grew like a flower.

43

His velvety eyes rose in waves.

44

Ah, even within the illusion he saw me.

45

I leaned against the breast of the wall.

46

I said softly, “Is this you, Kami?”

47

But I saw that, from that bitter past,

48

nothing remained except a name.

49

At last the line of the road came to an end.

50

I arrived by the dust-covered road.

51

The thirsty one found no way to the spring, and alas,

52

my city was the grave of my desire.
