01

My death will come one day,

02

in a spring bright with waves of light,

03

in a winter dust-covered and distant,

04

or in an autumn empty of cries and passion.

05

My death will come one day,

06

one of these bitter and sweet days,

07

an empty day like other days,

08

a shadow of todays, of yesterdays.

09

My eyes will be like dark corridors,

10

my cheeks like cold marble.

11

Suddenly a sleep will carry me away.

12

I shall become empty of the cry of pain.

13

Quietly, upon my notebook, there creep

14

my hands, freed from the enchantment of poetry.

15

I remember that, within my hands,

16

once the blood of poetry flamed.

17

The earth calls me to itself at every moment.

18

They arrive along the road to place me in the earth.

19

Ah, perhaps my lovers, at midnight,

20

will lay flowers upon my sorrowful grave.

21

After me, suddenly there draw aside

22

the dark curtains of my world; unfamiliar eyes creep

23

across my papers and notebooks.

24

Into my little room there steps,

25

after me, a stranger to my memory.

26

Beside the mirror there remain

27

a strand of hair, the mark of a hand, a comb.

28

I escape myself, and what remains of me—

29

all that is left behind will fall into ruin.

30

My soul, like the sail of a boat,

31

grows distant and disappears into the horizons.

32

Impatiently, one after another, they hurry,

33

the days and weeks and months.

34

Your eyes, waiting for a letter,

35

remain fixed upon the eyes of the roads.

36

But my cold body is now

37

clasped by the clinging earth, the earth.

38

Without you, far from the beats of your heart,

39

my heart rots there beneath the earth.

40

Later, my name, the rain and wind

41

will gently wash from the face of the stone.

42

My grave will remain nameless upon the road,

43

freed from the tales of reputation and shame.
