01

Those days are gone,

02

those good days,

03

those wholesome, overflowing days,

04

those skies full of spangles,

05

those branches full of cherries,

06

those houses leaning against one another within the green shelter of ivy,

07

those rooftops of playful kites,

08

those alleys bewildered by the scent of acacias.

09

Those days are gone,

10

those days when, through the slit of my eyelids,

11

my songs welled like a bubble filled with air.

12

Whatever my eyes glided over,

13

they drank it like fresh milk.

14

It was as though, within my pupils,

15

there was the restless rabbit of happiness.

16

Every dawn, with the old sun,

17

it went searching in unfamiliar plains.

18

At night, it plunged into the forests of darkness.

19

Those days are gone,

20

those silent, snowy days,

21

when, from behind the windowpane in the warm room,

22

at every moment I gazed outside.

23

My clean snow, like soft down,

24

fell quietly

25

upon the old wooden ladder,

26

upon the slack line of the clothes rope,

27

upon the hair of the old pines.

28

And I thought about tomorrow—ah,

29

tomorrow,

فردا

30

a slippery, white volume,

31

began with the rustling of Grandmother's chador,

32

and with the appearance of her confused shadow in the doorway,

33

which suddenly released itself into the cold sensation of light,

34

and the wandering design of the flight of doves

35

within the coloured cups of glass.

36

Tomorrow…

37

was the sleep-inducing warmth of the korsi.

38

Quickly and recklessly,

39

away from my mother's gaze, the faulty lines

40

I erased from my old handwriting exercises.

41

When the snow settled,

42

I wandered, dejected, in the little garden.

43

At the foot of the dry jasmine pots,

44

I buried my dead sparrows.

45

Those days are gone,

46

those days of enchantment and wonder,

47

those days of sleep and waking.

48

In those days, every shadow had a secret.

49

Every closed box concealed a treasure.

50

Every corner of the storeroom, in the silence of noon,

51

seemed to be a world.

52

Anyone who was not afraid of darkness

53

was a hero in my eyes.

54

Those days are gone,

55

those festival days,

56

that waiting for sunshine and flowers,

57

those tremors of fragrance

58

in the silent, beloved gathering of wild narcissi,

59

which, on the last winter morning,

60

came to visit the city.

61

The songs of itinerant sellers in the long street, the green patches—

62

the bazaar floated among wandering smells,

63

among the pungent smells of coffee and fish.

64

The bazaar spread beneath our feet, stretched, and mingled with every moment of the road,

65

and turned at the backs of the dolls' eyes.

66

The bazaar was Mother, who hurried toward flowing, colourful volumes,

67

and returned

68

with parcels of gifts, with baskets full.

69

It was the bazaar pouring forth,

70

pouring forth,

71

pouring forth.

72

Those days are gone,

73

those days of gazing into the mysteries of the body,

74

those days of cautious acquaintance with the beauty of blue veins,

75

a hand which, with a flower,

76

called from behind a wall

77

to another hand,

78

and the little ink stains upon this troubled, anxious, frightened hand,

79

and love,

80

which expressed itself within a shy greeting.

81

In the hot, smoke-filled noons,

82

we sang our love within the dust of the alley.

83

We were familiar with the simple language of messenger flowers.

84

We carried our hearts to the garden of innocent kindnesses,

85

and lent them to the trees.

86

And the ball, with messages of kisses, turned within our hands.

87

And it was love,

88

that confused feeling which, in the darkness of the entrance hall,

89

suddenly

90

surrounded us,

91

and drew us into the burning density of breaths and heartbeats and furtive smiles.

92

Those days are gone.

93

Those days, like plants that rot in the sun,

94

rotted from the shining of the sun.

95

And those alleys bewildered by the scent of acacias disappeared

96

within the noisy crowding of streets from which there is no return.

97

And the girl who coloured her cheeks

98

with geranium leaves—ah—

99

is now a lonely woman,

100

is now a lonely woman.
