THE DEATH OF COLOR · POEM 1 OF 22
In the Tar of Night
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01For a long time, in this solitude,
02silence has colored the shape of my lips.
03A voice from far away calls me,
04but my feet are in the tar of night.
05There is no opening in this darkness:
06door and wall have joined together.
07If a shadow slips across the ground,
08it is an illusory image, freed from a bond.
09The breath of people
10is utterly dispirited.
11For an age, in this withered corner of the air,
12every joy has died.
13The magic hand of night
14closes the door on me and sorrow.
15However hard I try,
16it laughs at me.
17The images I drew by day,
18night came and coated with soot.
19The designs I cast in the night,
20day appeared and wiped away with cotton.
21For a long time, everyone, like me,
22has had silence coloring the shape of their lips.
23There is no movement in this silence:
24hands and feet are in the tar of night.
