THE DEATH OF COLOR · POEM 11 OF 22
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01My story has grown rusty now:
02it has a bond with the breaths of my night.
03If a ray slips over its lips,
04my heart tells me: it is the longing for a smile.
05Its staring eyes tell me:
06where is a lamp to light our hearts?
07Everyone whose soul was weary said to me:
08where is a fire to burn our hearts?
09Bricks fall from this wall.
10Its guardian suffered in vain.
11No hand should reach for the pickaxe;
12if a flood comes, it will carry it off easily.
13The damp wind of time passes.
14Color flakes from our bodies.
15The house has a pattern of decay upon its ceiling.
16It will collapse upon our heads.
17At times the rampart of silence trembles:
18giants rub their heads against the ground.
19Beware of stepping forward.
20Eyes keep watch upon the road of night.
21If my support trembles tonight,
22I must put my hand against the wall.
23I have a bond with the breaths of my night:
24my story has grown rusty now.
