01

In this room with an empty body,

02

O mist-shrouded human!

03

From the ring of which door does your gaze hang?

04

The doors are shut,

05

and their key has gone far into the darkness.

06

A breeze seeps from the walls:

07

the carpet's flowers tremble.

08

Clouds fly upon the curtain's multicolored horizon.

09

A rain of stars filled your room,

10

and you are lost in the darkness,

11

O mist-shrouded human!

12

Your old chair's legs have sunk into the pool's footbath.

13

A willow has grown from the soil of your bed,

14

and searches for itself in the tiled pool.

15

An image hangs from the willow's branch:

16

a child whose eyes hold your silence.

17

As though the child were looking at you,

18

and you, through thousands of empty images,

19

as though you were looking at me,

20

O mist-shrouded human!

21

Through every night of solitude,

22

in every pane of glass, I have seen you.

23

My mother used to frighten me:

24

the bogeyman is behind the glass!

25

And I used to see you in the glass.

26

O wandering bogeyman!

27

Come forward,

28

let us creep into our shadows.

29

The doors are shut,

30

and their key has gone far into the darkness.

31

Let me open the window to you.

32

The mist-shrouded human crossed the tiled pool,

33

and flew toward me, weeping.

34

The windowpane broke and fell:

35

the bogeyman of the glass,

36

the glass of his life had shattered.
