01

O you whose dream has coloured the night,

02

whose fragrance has made my breast heavy,

03

O you who have spread yourself before my eyes,

04

and given me joy out of former sorrow.

05

Like a rain that washes the body of the earth,

06

you have cleansed my existence of impurities.

07

O the beats of my burning body,

08

a fire in the shadow of my eyelashes.

09

O you, fuller than the wheat fields,

10

O you, more fruitful than golden branches.

11

O you who have opened a door upon suns

12

amid the onslaught of the darkness of doubts.

13

With you, I no longer fear a pain.

14

If there is one, it is only the pain of my happiness.

15

O my sorrowful heart—and this burden of light?

16

The tumult of life in the depths of a grave?

17

O your two eyes, my meadows,

18

the brand of your eyes impressed upon my eyes.

19

If I had had you within myself before this,

20

I would not have imagined everyone to be you.

21

The pain of wanting is a dark pain:

22

to go, and fruitlessly diminish oneself,

23

to lay one's head upon black-hearted breasts,

24

to stain one's breast with the filth of hatreds,

25

to find the sting of snakes in caresses,

26

to find poison in the smiles of companions,

27

to place gold in the hands of swindlers,

28

to become lost in the expanse of bazaars.

29

Ah, you who have mingled with my soul,

30

you who have raised me from my grave,

31

like a star with two gold-marked wings,

32

arriving from the distant sky.

33

Through you, my solitude grew silent.

34

My body acquired the scent of an embrace.

35

Your water for the dry stream of my breast,

36

your flood for the beds of my veins.

37

In a world so cold and black,

38

with your steps my steps are upon the road.

39

O you who have hidden beneath my skin,

40

who have welled within my skin like blood,

41

who have burned my hair with caresses,

42

my cheeks burned by the heat of desire.

43

Ah, you who are a stranger to my dress,

44

familiar with the meadows of my body.

45

Ah, you, bright dawn without a sunset,

46

sun of the lands of the south.

47

Ah, ah, you, fresher than dawn,

48

fresher than springs, more deeply quenched.

49

This is no longer love; this is enchantment.

50

It is a chandelier in silence and darkness.

51

When love awoke within my breast,

52

from desire, I became self-giving from head to toe.

53

This is no longer me, no longer me.

54

What a pity for that lifetime I lived with myself.

55

O my lips, the kissing place of your kiss,

56

my eyes fixed upon the road of your kiss.

57

O the convulsions of pleasure within my body,

58

O the contours of your body, my garment.

59

Ah, I want to split apart,

60

that my joy may for a moment be stained with sorrow.

61

Ah, I want to rise from my place,

62

and, like a cloud, shed tears in sobs.

63

This narrow heart of mine—and this smoke of incense?

64

Within the chamber, the plucking of harp and lute?

65

This empty space—and these flights?

66

This silent night—and these songs?

67

O your gaze, a lullaby laden with enchantment,

68

the cradle of restless children.

69

O your breaths, a half-asleep breeze,

70

which has washed from me the tremors of anxiety,

71

asleep within the smile of my tomorrows,

72

reaching into the depths of my worlds.

73

O you who have mingled me with the consciousness of poetry,

74

who have poured all this fire into my poems.

75

Since you kindled the fever of my love in this way,

76

inevitably you burned my poetry with fire.
