ANOTHER BIRTH · POEM 20 OF 31
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Night grew black and fell ill.
02A rebellion of wakefulness seized the eyes.
03The eyes do not cease seeing, alas.
04The eyes do not know how to close, alas.
05It went and found within me an old meadow.
06It found my existence to be an old waiting.
07It saw that desert and my solitude,
08my cardboard moon and sun.
09Like an aged embryo at war with the womb,
10it tears the wall of the womb with its claws.
11Alive, yet within it the longing to be born;
12dead, yet within it the desire to give up life.
13Self-absorbed from the pain of not wanting itself,
14asleep from the yearning to rise.
15My laughter from a futile sadness, my shame from a futile purity of heart,
16my heavy estrangement from my loving,
17the sharp ardour of death in my lovemaking.
18Never having descended from its own rooftop,
19at a height, a witness to its own execution.
20A worm of the earth, and its earth foul-smelling,
21its kites within the pure heavens.
22Unknown is its half-hidden part,
23ashamed its human face.
24Alley by alley, in search of its mate,
25it runs, addicted to the smell of its mate.
26At times it seeks the mate, yet does not believe in it.
27But its mate is far lonelier than it.
28Both in fear and dread of one another,
29bitter and ungrateful toward one another.
30Their love, a condemned yearning;
31their union, a doubtful dream.
32Ah, if I had a road to a sea,
33what fear would I have of sinking?
34If, within a marsh, water ceases flowing,
35from its own stillness it is diminished.
36Its soul becomes a territory of ruin.
37Its depths become the grave of fish.
38Gazelles, O gazelles of the plains,
39if sometimes, upon the paths of flower-wanderings,
40you find a little stream singing,
41flowing toward the self-sufficiency of seas,
42flowing from the silk of its own current,
43lying upon the chariot of its own rebellion,
44the mane of the wind's horse within its claws,
45the red spirit of the moon following it,
46opening the green thighs of stems,
47stealing the untouched fragrance of bushes,
48and above it, within the gaze of every bubble,
49the unwithheld reflection of sunlight,
50remember the sleep of that sleepless one.
51Remember death within the marsh.
