ANOTHER BIRTH · POEM 21 OF 31
Earthly Verses
English translation draft, awaiting review.
02the sun grew cold,
03and blessing departed from the lands,
04and grasses dried in the deserts,
05and fish dried in the seas,
06and the earth its dead
07no longer accepted into itself.
08Night, in all the pale windows,
09like a doubtful imagining,
10was continually gathering and overflowing.
11And the roads abandoned their continuation
12within the darkness.
13No one thought of love any longer.
14No one thought of conquest any longer.
16thought of anything any longer.
17Within the caves of solitude,
18futility was born.
19Blood smelled of cannabis and opium.
20Pregnant women
21gave birth to headless infants.
22And the cradles, from shame,
23sought refuge in the graves.
24What a bitter and black age.
25Bread had overcome the marvellous power of prophetic mission,
26defeating it.
27Hungry and destitute prophets
28fled from the divine meeting places.
29And the lost lambs
30no longer heard the shepherd's calls
31within the bewilderment of the plains.
32In the eyes of mirrors, it was as though
33movements and colours and images
34were reflected upside down.
35And above the heads of lowly clowns
36and the shameless faces of prostitutes,
37a sacred, luminous halo
38burned like a flaming umbrella.
39The marshes of alcohol,
40with those astringent, poisonous vapours,
41drew the motionless mass of intellectuals
42into their own depths.
43And the troublesome mice
44gnawed the gold-adorned pages of books
45within old cupboards.
46The sun was dead.
47The sun was dead, and tomorrow,
48in the minds of children,
49had a vague, lost meaning.
50The strangeness of this old word,
51in their exercises,
52with a large black stain,
53they depicted.
55the fallen mass of people,
56dead of heart, gaunt, and bewildered,
57beneath the ominous burden of their corpses,
58went from one estrangement to another.
59And the painful desire for crime
60swelled within their hands.
61Sometimes a spark, an insignificant spark,
62this silent, lifeless gathering
63would suddenly shatter from within.
64They attacked one another.
65The men slit one another's throats
66with knives,
67and amid a bed of blood,
68with underage girls,
69they lay.
70They were drowned in their own terror.
71And the frightening sense of sinfulness
72left their blind, dull souls
74Continually, at the ceremonies of execution,
75when the rope of the gallows
76forced the convulsing eyes of a condemned person
77out of their sockets,
78they withdrew into themselves,
79and from a lustful imagining,
80their old, weary nerves throbbed with pain.
81But always, along the edges of the squares,
82you would see these little criminals
84and staring
85at the continual falling of fountains of water.
86Perhaps, still, behind the crushed eyes in the depths of frozen stillness,
87something half-alive and confused
88had remained,
89which, in its feeble effort, wanted
90to believe in the purity of the song of waters.
91Perhaps—but what an endless emptiness.
92The sun was dead,
93and no one knew
94that the name of that sorrowful dove
95which had fled from hearts was faith.
96Ah, imprisoned voice,
97will the splendour of your despair ever,
98from any side of this detested night,
99tunnel toward the light?
100Ah, imprisoned voice,
101O last voice of voices…
