01

And the strange face

02

said to me from the other side of the little window,

03

“The one who sees is right.

04

I am frightening, like the feeling of being lost.

05

But, my God,

06

how can anyone be afraid of me?

07

I, I, who have never

08

been anything but a light and wandering kite

09

upon the mist-covered rooftops of the sky,

10

nothing else.

11

And my love and desire and hatred and pain,

12

in the nocturnal estrangement of the cemetery,

13

a mouse named death has gnawed.”

14

And the strange face, with those thin, trailing, frail lines

15

whose flowing design the wind

16

at every moment erased and transformed,

17

and its soft and long hair,

18

which the hidden movement of night carried away,

19

and spread over the whole expanse of night,

20

like plants at the bottom of the sea,

21

flowed upon the other side of the little window,

22

and cried, “Believe me, I am not alive.”

23

Through it, the density of darkness,

24

and the silver fruits of the pine, I still

25

could see—ah, but it…

26

it glided over all of this,

27

and its infinite heart rose,

28

as though it were the green feeling of the trees,

29

and its eyes continued into eternity.

30

“You are right.

31

Never, after my death,

32

have I dared to look into the mirror.

33

And I am so dead

34

that nothing proves my death any longer.

35

Ah,

آه

36

did you hear the sound of a cicada

37

which, sheltered by night, fled toward the moon,

38

from the far end of the garden?

39

I think that all the stars

40

have migrated to a lost sky.

41

And the city, the city was so silent.

42

Throughout the whole length of my journey,

43

except for a group of pale statues,

44

and a few street sweepers,

45

who smelled of rubbish and tobacco,

46

and weary, sleepy patrolmen,

47

I encountered nothing.

48

Alas,

49

I am dead,

50

and night still

51

seems to be the continuation of that same pointless night.”

52

It fell silent,

53

and over the wide expanse of its two eyes,

54

the feeling of weeping brought bitterness and cloudiness.

55

“You who have hidden your faces

56

in the shadow of the sorrowful mask of life,

57

concealing them,

58

do you sometimes think of this despairing truth,

59

that those alive today

60

are nothing but the dregs of a living person?

61

It is as though a child

62

has grown old within its first smile.

63

And the heart of this defaced inscription,

64

whose original lines have been tampered with,

65

will no longer feel trust in its own stony authority.

66

Perhaps the addiction to being,

67

and the continual consumption of sedatives,

68

have drawn the pure and simple human desires

69

into the abyss of decay.

70

Perhaps the soul,

71

to the isolation of an uninhabited island,

72

has been exiled.

73

Perhaps I dreamed the cicada's voice.

74

Then these foot soldiers who patiently

75

lean upon their wooden spears

76

are those wind-swift riders,

77

and these bent, thin opium addicts

78

are those pure, lofty-minded mystics?

79

Then it is true, true, that humanity

80

no longer awaits a revelation,

81

and that girls in love,

82

with the long needle of embroidery,

83

have torn their credulous eyes?

84

Now the resonance of the cries of crows

85

in the depths of the dreams of dawn

86

is felt.

87

The mirrors come to consciousness.

88

And the separate and solitary shapes

89

to the first drawn-out stretch of waking,

90

and to the hidden onslaught of ominous nightmares,

91

surrender themselves.

92

Alas, with all my memories,

93

of blood, which sang nothing but a bloody epic,

94

and of pride, a pride which never

95

lived itself so humbly,

96

I stand at the end of my opportunity.

97

And I listen—not a sound.

98

And I stare—not the movement of a leaf.

99

And my name, which was the breath of all that purity,

100

no longer disturbs even the dust of tombs.”

101

It trembled,

102

and collapsed upon its two sides,

103

and its pleading hands, from the cracks,

104

like long sighs toward me,

105

came forward.

106

“It is cold,

107

and the winds sever my lines.

108

Is there anyone in this land who still

109

is not afraid of becoming acquainted

110

with their own vanished face?

111

Has the time not come

112

for this little window to open—open, open, open—

113

for the sky to rain,

114

and for a man, over the corpse of his own dead self,

115

to pray in lamentation?”

116

Perhaps it was the bird that cried,

117

or the wind among the trees,

118

or I who, before the dead end of my own heart,

119

like a wave of regret and shame and pain,

120

was rising,

121

and through the window I saw

122

that those two hands, those two bitter reproaches,

123

still stretched toward my two hands,

124

in the brightness of a false dawn,

125

were dissolving,

126

and a voice which, upon the cold horizon,

127

cried out,

128

“Farewell.”
