01

All day I was weeping in the mirror.

02

Spring had entrusted my window

03

to the green illusion of the trees.

04

My body did not fit within the cocoon of my solitude.

05

And the smell of my paper crown

06

had contaminated the space of that sunless territory,

07

polluting it.

08

I could not, I could no longer.

09

The sound of the alley, the sound of birds,

10

the sound of felt-covered balls disappearing,

11

and the fleeing tumult of children,

12

and the dance of balloons,

13

which, like bubbles of soapsuds,

14

rose at the end of a stem of thread,

15

and the wind, the wind which seemed

16

to breathe in the depths of the deepest, dark moments of lovemaking,

17

pressed against the wall of the silent fortress of my confidence,

18

bearing down,

19

and through the old cracks called my heart by name.

20

All day, my gaze

21

had remained fixed upon the eyes of my life,

22

upon those two anxious, frightened eyes,

23

which fled from my fixed gaze,

24

and, like liars,

25

sought refuge in the safe isolation of eyelids.

26

Which summit, which height?

27

Do not all these twisting roads,

28

in that cold, sucking mouth,

29

reach the point of meeting and ending?

30

What did you give me, O simple, deceptive words,

31

and you, the discipline of limbs and desires?

32

If I had placed a flower in my hair,

33

would it not have been more alluring than this deceit, this paper crown,

34

which has begun to stink above my head?

35

How did the spirit of the wilderness seize me,

36

and the moon's enchantment take me far from the faith of the flock?

37

How did the incompleteness of my heart grow,

38

and no half complete this half?

39

How did I stand and see

40

the earth beneath my two feet becoming empty of support,

41

and the warmth of my mate's body

42

finding no way to the empty waiting of my body?

43

Which summit, which height?

44

Give me shelter, O troubled lamps,

45

O bright, doubtful houses,

46

upon whose sunny rooftops the washed garments,

47

within the embrace of fragrant smoke, sway.

48

Give me shelter, O simple, complete women,

49

who, through the skin of your delicate fingertips,

50

the course of the delightful movement of a fetus

51

follow,

52

and within the opening of whose collars the air always

53

mingles with the smell of fresh milk.

54

Which summit, which height?

55

Give me shelter, O hearths full of fire, O horseshoes of happiness,

56

and you, the song of copper vessels in the blackened kitchen,

57

and you, the melancholy humming of the sewing machine,

58

and you, the day-and-night quarrel of carpets and brooms.

59

Give me shelter, O all the greedy loves,

60

whose bed of possession the painful desire for survival

61

adorns with magical water,

62

and drops of fresh blood.

63

All day, all day,

64

released, released like a carcass upon water,

65

I advanced toward the most fearsome rock,

66

toward the deepest caves of the sea,

67

and the most flesh-eating fish.

68

And the delicate vertebrae of my back

69

throbbed with the sensation of death.

70

I could not, I could no longer.

71

The sound of my footsteps rose from the denial of the road.

72

And my despair had grown wider than the patience of my soul.

73

And that spring, and that green-coloured illusion,

74

which passed across the little window, said to my heart,

75

“Look:

76

you never advanced.

77

You sank.”
