ANOTHER BIRTH · POEM 25 OF 31
Conquest of the Garden
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01That crow which flew
02above our heads,
03and plunged into the troubled thought of a wandering cloud,
04and whose voice crossed the breadth of the horizon like a short spear,
05will carry the news of us with it to the city.
06Everyone knows.
07Everyone knows
08that you and I, through that cold, sullen opening,
09saw the garden,
10and from that playful branch beyond reach,
11plucked the apple.
12Everyone is afraid.
13Everyone is afraid, but you and I
14joined the lamp and water and mirror,
15and were not afraid.
16It is not a question of the frail bond of two names,
17and an embrace upon the old pages of a register.
18It is a question of my happy hair,
19with the burned poppies of your kiss,
20and the intimacy of our bodies in their cunning,
21and the shining of our nakedness,
22like the scales of fish in water.
23It is a question of the silvery life of a song
24which, at dawn, the little fountain sings.
25Within that flowing green forest,
26one night, of the wild rabbits,
27and within that troubled, cold-blooded sea,
28of the shells full of pearls,
29and upon that strange, conquering mountain,
30of the young eagles, we asked,
31“What must be done?”
32Everyone knows.
33Everyone knows.
34We have found the way to the cold and silent sleep of Simurghs.
35We found the truth in the little garden,
36in the shy gaze of a nameless flower,
37and survival within a boundless moment,
38when two suns gazed at one another.
39It is not a question of a frightened whisper in darkness.
40It is a question of day and open windows,
41and fresh air,
42and a hearth in which useless things burn,
43and an earth made fruitful by another sowing,
44and birth and growth and pride.
45It is a question of our loving hands,
46which have built a bridge of messages of fragrance and light and breeze
47above the nights.
48Come to the meadow,
49to the great meadow,
50and call me from behind the breaths of the silk flower,
51as the gazelle calls its mate.
52The curtains are full of a hidden, stifled grief.
53And the innocent doves,
54from the heights of their white tower,
55look upon the earth.
