THE CAPTIVE · POEM 3 OF 28
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01I want you, and I know that never
02will I hold you in my arms as my heart desires.
03You are that clear and radiant sky;
04I, in this corner of a cage, am a captive bird.
05Behind the cold, dark bars,
06my longing gaze rests bewildered upon you.
07I imagine a hand reaching forward,
08and suddenly I spread my wings toward you.
09I imagine that, in a moment of inattention,
10I take wing from this silent prison,
11laugh into the eyes of the jailer,
12and begin life anew beside you.
13I imagine this, and know that never
14will I have the strength to leave this cage.
15Even if the jailer should consent,
16I no longer have the breath to fly.
17Behind the bars, each bright morning,
18a child's gaze smiles at me.
19When I begin my song of joy,
20his lips approach me with a kiss.
21If, O sky, I should wish one day
22to take wing from this silent prison,
23what could I say to the eyes of the weeping child?
24“Forgive me, for I am a captive bird.”
25I am that candle which, with its own heart's burning,
26sets a ruined dwelling alight.
27If I should choose to go out,
28I would throw a household into turmoil.
