THE CAPTIVE · POEM 5 OF 28
A Memory of the Past
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01There is a city beside that roaring river,
02with tangled palms and nights full of light.
03There is a city beside that river, and my heart
04is captive there in the grasp of a proud man.
05There is a city beside that river which for years
06has opened its embrace to him and me.
07Upon the shore's sands, in the shade of the palms,
08he stole kisses from my eyes and lips.
09That moon has seen how I softened
10his stony heart with the magic of my love.
11That moon has seen tears of joy tremble
12in his two wild eyes of unfamiliar hue.
13We travelled into the heart of moonlit nights,
14in a boat upon the breast of boundless waves.
15In the troubled silence of midnight, there blossomed
16over our gathering the white gaze of the stars.
17He slept upon my lap like a child, and tenderly
18I kissed the two eyes that had fallen asleep.
19My skirt fell into the mouth of a wave, and he
20pulled my water-soaked skirt out again.
21Now it is I, in the heart of this solitude and silence,
22who remember you, O bustling city.
23My heart is bound to him; hold him dear,
24for I gladden my own heart with thoughts of him.
