THE CAPTIVE · POEM 6 OF 28
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01From the face of enchanting nature,
02I have shut my two sorrow-filled eyes,
03so that my fevered gaze may not behold
04these manifestations of longing and mourning.
05Autumn, O traveller covered in dust,
06what do you conceal in your skirts?
07Apart from dead and withered leaves,
08what other wealth do you bring the world?
09What but sorrow does it give a poet's heart,
10your heavy, dark, and silent dusk?
11What but coldness and weariness does it bestow
12upon my suffering soul, your embrace?
13Within your sorrow-laden silence,
14a slumbering grief torments me.
15That lost desire dances
16behind the hazy curtains of my imagination.
17Autumn, O song that stirs the imagination,
18autumn, O melody laden with anguish,
19autumn, O dejected smile
20upon the face of enchanting nature.
