01

No hope with which to gladden my heart,

02

no message, no familiar messenger,

03

no gaze in any eye to stir temptation,

04

no melody in a voice full of waves.

05

From the city of light and love and pain and darkness,

06

one dawn a woman went, her skirts trailing.

07

She was a bewildered bird that had lost its way,

08

who, weary and lamenting, went toward its nest.

09

Who ever shed a tear of sorrow after her?

10

Who ever understood her language?

11

These strangers did not know

12

that her cry was the echo of lamentations.

13

She gazed into a pair of eyes, hoping to find

14

the hiding place of hope and desire.

15

Alas, those two eyes that kindled fire

16

cast her into the lap of sin.

17

They spoke to her of nothing but desire.

18

They saw in her nothing but outward beauty.

19

Wherever she went, they sang into her ear

20

that woman had been created for pleasure.

21

One night she fell into an embrace and cried,

22

'Do not go! Let me, in this final moment,

23

quench my heart with the sight of you.'

24

The phantom vanished, and the door slammed shut.

25

Why did she place her hope in a futile love?

26

Why did she sleep in the bed of his embrace?

27

Why did she tell the secret of her maddened heart

28

into the ear of a lover with a stranger's nature?

29

Why? She was a pure drop of dew

30

that fell into the snare of the sun's flower.

31

One dawn, when her sun rose,

32

she slipped into its thirsty mouth and died.

33

She was a wine that stirred passion in a cup,

34

burning with love for thirsty lips.

35

Whenever a drinker came along,

36

she blazed with joy in the heart of the cup.

37

One night, suddenly, her waiting ended.

38

Her lips poured desire into a burning mouth.

39

Why did that man rage against her soul?

40

Why did he cling to the fragments of her cup?

41

Now here she is, and here this cold silence:

42

no message, no familiar messenger,

43

no gaze in any eye to stir temptation,

44

no melody in a voice full of waves.
