THE CAPTIVE · POEM 11 OF 28
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Do not fasten the lock of silence upon my lips,
02for in my heart I have a story still untold.
03Unfasten the heavy bonds from my feet,
04for this yearning has left my heart distraught.
05Come, man, you selfish creature,
06come and open the doors of the cage.
07If you have kept me imprisoned for a lifetime,
08release me now for this one breath.
09I am that bird, that bird who for so long
10has carried the thought of flight in her head.
11My song became a lament within my narrow breast.
12My days came to their end in longing.
13Do not fasten the lock of silence upon my lips,
14for I must speak my own secret,
15and bring to the ears of the world's people
16the fiery resonance of my voice.
17Come, open the door so I may spread my wings
18toward the bright sky of poetry.
19If you let me fly,
20I shall become a flower in the garden of poetry.
21My lips, with their sweet kiss, belong to you.
22My body, with its fragrant scent, belongs to you.
23My gaze, with its hidden sparks,
24my heart, with its blood-filled lament, belong to you.
25But, man, you selfish creature,
26do not say, 'Your poetry is shameful, shameful.'
27Do you know nothing of these troubled souls?
28The space within this cage is narrow, narrow.
29Do not say, 'Your poetry was sin from head to foot.'
30Give me a cup of this shame and sin.
31Paradise, its heavenly maidens, and the waters of Kawthar are yours.
32Give me a home in the depths of hell.
33A book, solitude, a poem, silence—
34these are my intoxication, the rapture of life.
35What sorrow if I have no way into a paradise,
36when within my heart is an everlasting paradise?
37At night, when the moon dances quietly
38amid the mute and silent sky,
39you are asleep, and I, drunk with desires,
40take the body of moonlight into my arms.
41The breeze stole a thousand kisses from me.
42I bestowed a thousand kisses upon the sun.
43In that prison, where you were among the prisoners,
44one night a kiss shook my very foundations.
45Cast aside this talk of reputation, man,
46for my shame has given me a drunken pleasure.
47That Lord will forgive me
48who gave the poet a maddened heart.
49Come, open the door so I may spread my wings
50toward the bright sky of poetry.
51If you let me fly,
52I shall become a flower in the garden of poetry.
