01

Yesterday, remembering you and that enchanting love,

02

I dressed my body in a green gown.

03

Again I gazed upon my face in the mirror,

04

and slowly untied the ribbon from my hair.

05

I brought perfume and sprinkled it upon my head and breast.

06

Coyly I lined my eyes with kohl.

07

I let my hair tumble over my shoulders,

08

and gently placed a beauty mark at the corner of my lips.

09

Then I said to myself, 'Alas, he is not here

10

to be astonished by all this enchantment and charm,

11

to see the green gown upon my body

12

and say with a smile, "You have become so beautiful again."'

13

He is not here to gaze into the pupils of my dark eyes

14

and see the reflection of his own face.

15

What use is this loosened hair to me tonight?

16

Where is his hand, to make its home within it?

17

He is not here, when he falls into my embrace,

18

to breathe, like a madman, the enchanting fragrance of my body.

19

O mirror, I have died of longing and regret—

20

and he, too, who would clasp my body to his breast.

21

I gazed at the mirror, and it listened to me.

22

I said, “How will you solve this difficulty of ours?”

23

It broke and cried, “In telling you of my own sorrow,

24

what can I say, woman? You have broken my heart.”
