01

I am sick with love's fear and hope.

02

I want everlasting peace.

03

I would no longer add to my heart's longing.

04

I want boundless repose.

05

Trampling my heart, I say:

06

it is better to leave that quarrelsome man;

07

to take a kiss from a cup of poison

08

is better than a fiery kiss.

09

He thought that if one night, intoxicated,

10

I passed until dawn in the bed of his love,

11

the other nights that had passed from my life

12

I had spent in the laps of others.

13

No longer, out of foolishness, will I

14

sacrifice my pride to his love.

15

Perhaps, when I leave him behind, I shall find

16

my lost joy and happiness.

17

The one who gave me delight and intoxication,

18

the one who was my hope and happiness,

19

wherever he sat, said without a second thought,

20

“She was an ordinary, simple-minded woman.”

21

I burn from this duplicity and deceit.

22

I want a child's sincerity.

23

O death, from your silent lips

24

I want one everlasting kiss.

25

Go, bring your pride before a woman

26

who thinks nothing of your love,

27

who will not tenderly press to her breast

28

that hot and suffering body of yours.

29

The love I scattered upon your path

30

you will not find within another breast.

31

Than the kiss I showered upon your lips,

32

you will not find a more searing fire.

33

In search of you and your gaze,

34

my restless eyes will run no longer.

35

The thought of those two dreamlike eyes

36

will never again steal sleep from my eyes.

37

No longer, hoping for a moment's meeting,

38

will I wander from door to door in pursuit of you.

39

In pursuit of you, O fruitless hope,

40

I will not wander, mad and unaware.

41

In the darkness of that silent little room,

42

I will not remain, helpless and waiting.

43

I will not fix my gaze upon the door each moment,

44

nor bring that hidden sigh to my lips.

45

O woman, whose heart is full of sincerity,

46

seek no faithfulness from a man—never, never.

47

He does not know the meaning of love.

48

Never tell him the secret of your heart.
