01

Because of that letter you gave me and those bitter complaints,

02

my eyes have stayed awake until midnight, remembering you.

03

O source of my hope, O distant support,

04

never be hurt by what lies hidden in my poetry.

05

Perhaps I did not have the strength, in silence,

06

to conceal the feelings of my little heart.

07

Let my song become a teller of secrets.

08

Let me reveal what I have hidden.

09

Whenever I look back upon the past,

10

my own love

11

I remember like a lost sun.

12

I lament a heart that has drowned in blood.

13

What did this poetry give me but my beloved's hurt?

14

How can I conceal this pain,

15

when my heart has so bitterly recoiled from you?

16

These poems that have wounded your soul

17

are the cries of a heart that has suffered anguish.

18

I spoke of a cage, but what can I say? Before this,

19

I had no knowledge of people's duplicity.

20

Alas, this alluring world, this player of disguises,

21

with its glitter and display, at last carried me away.

22

Now it is I who, weary of the snare of deception and cunning,

23

have turned once more toward the corner of the cage.

24

Open the door, for throughout my whole life

25

I have never been happy except behind the cage's bars.

26

Bind my feet once more in chains,

27

so that temptation and deceit may not dislodge me,

28

so that the iron hand of countless coloured desires

29

may not fasten another shackle upon my feet.
