THE CAPTIVE · POEM 17 OF 28
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01A sick child sleeps against me,
02with red cheeks flushed by fever,
03with tangled, dishevelled hair,
04who has found no relief from pain until midnight.
05At every moment, within my hand, tremble
06his thin and feverish fingers.
07I cry, “O God,
08take my life and spare him so much suffering.”
09Sometimes, amid the terror of solitude,
10I ask myself what his fate will be.
11My tears roll down my cheeks
12when I hear his name in my own lament.
13O stars, absorbed in watching,
14this is my child who is ill.
15I have not slept from night until dawn, and you can see:
16these are my eyes that keep awake.
17I remember how he would ask for a kiss
18with enchanting, exuberant laughter,
19or sit with a restless gaze,
20waiting to eat his breakfast.
21Sometimes his voice reaches my ear:
22“Mama, my heart burns from such exhaustion.”
23Within a disordered bed, I see
24a child burning in the fire of fever.
25The night is silent, and against me he moans,
26his soul exhausted by the severity of his illness.
27At my anxiety and terror, there laugh
28the solitary strokes of the wall clock.
