01

My lot is nothing but longing.

02

Ill fortune, a stranger, became my companion.

03

Though innocent, they chained my feet.

04

Alas for this prison of mine, so full of anguish.

05

Alas for this eye that secretly searches,

06

day and night, for my secret within my eyes.

07

He puts his ear to the door, hoping to hear,

08

perhaps, my lost voice.

09

Sometimes he asks, “What is your sorrow?

10

Why, after all, are your thoughts so troubled?

11

Do not hide this secret without cause.

12

A mute pain lies asleep within your gaze.”

13

Sometimes he laments before others,

14

“She is no longer yesterday's girl.

15

Ah, that fresh and smiling girl of mine

16

is not this dejected, mysterious woman.”

17

Sometimes he tries, through the magic of love,

18

to enter my heart and enchant me.

19

Sometimes he wants, with an angry shout,

20

to force me out of this fortress of secrets.

21

Sometimes he says, “Where is it? What became

22

of that intoxicated, enchanting gaze of yours?

23

That warm smile that once brought happiness

24

no longer appears upon your feverish lips.”

25

Distraught, I fix my eyes upon him,

26

and silently lament, “This is what there is.”

27

I myself do not know what my sorrow is.

28

Under my breath I say, “How utterly I have lost myself.”

29

There is no kindred voice to whom I can tell

30

the secret of this terrifying sorrow of mine.

31

Surely no one has ever, as I have,

32

made herself the cause of her own suffering.

33

This sorrow upon my soul comes from me.

34

There is no remedy now for what I have brought upon myself.

35

With my feet in chains, I lament that I have

36

no affinity with the links of the chain.

37

Ah, this is what you sought so eagerly:

38

my secret, the secret of a maddened reed,

39

the secret of a being whose thoughts contained

40

not a trace of concern for reputation and honour,

41

the secret of a being who is now nothing

42

but a hateful presence to you.

43

Ah, this is not what torments me;

44

otherwise, why should I fear your anger and displeasure?
