THE CAPTIVE · POEM 19 OF 28
The Girl and Spring
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01The girl sat alone beside the window and said,
02“O daughter of spring, I envy you.
03Your fragrance, flowers, song, and intoxication—
04by God, I would buy them from you with whatever you desire.”
05Upon the young branch of a tree, a blossom
06coyly opened its two closed eyes.
07At the edge of silver-coloured water, a crested bird washed
08its delicate, beautiful, weary wings.
09The sun laughed, and from the waves of its laughter,
10an enchanting brightness ran across the face of day.
11A little wave crept forward, and a breeze into its ear
12sang a secret; the wave gently slipped away.
13The gardener laughed: “At last spring has come.
14The tree I planted has blossomed now.”
15The girl heard and said, “What use is this spring?
16So many springs have passed when I had no spring.”
17The thirsty sun on the other side of the sky
18seemed to be seated within a brazier of blood.
19The day was passing, and lost in a strange thought,
20the girl sat sorrowfully beside the window.
