01

From the narrow confines of the prison of darkness,

02

from the dark mire of this world,

03

hear my cry, so full of need,

04

ah, O God, all-powerful and without equal.

05

For a moment, tear away from around my body,

06

tear away this veil of darkness.

07

Perhaps within my breast you will see

08

this source of sin and ruin.

09

This heart you gave me is no heart;

10

it has throbbed in blood—ah, release it.

11

Either empty it of lust and desire,

12

or bind it to affection and faithfulness.

13

Only you are aware, and you know

14

the secrets of that first transgression.

15

Only you have the power to bestow

16

upon my soul its first purity.

17

Ah, God, how can I tell you

18

that I am weary of my body and repelled by it?

19

Every night upon the threshold of your majesty,

20

it is as though I hope for another body.

21

Take away from my bright eyes

22

the desire to run toward another.

23

Show kindness, God, and teach them

24

to recoil from the flash of another's eyes.

25

Give me a love that will make me

26

like the angels of your paradise.

27

Give me a companion in whom I may see

28

one small corner of the purity of your nature.

29

One night, erase from the tablet of my memory

30

the image of love and its deceptive design.

31

In revenge for his cruelty, I desire

32

to conquer his rival anew in love.

33

Ah, God, whose powerful hand

34

laid the foundations of the world of being,

35

show your face and take from my heart

36

the desire for sin and the worship of appearances.

37

Do not consent that an insignificant servant

38

should rebel and turn toward anyone but you.

39

Do not consent that she should pour

40

the flood of her tears at the foot of a winecup.

41

From the narrow confines of the prison of darkness,

42

from the dark mire of this world,

43

hear my cry, so full of need,

44

ah, O God, all-powerful and without equal.
