THE CAPTIVE · POEM 25 OF 28
The Patience of Stone
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01On the first day, I told myself,
02“I shall never see him again.”
03On the second day, I said it again,
04but with sorrow and with doubt.
05The third day also passed, yet
06I remained true to my promise.
07The darkness of the prison was killing me,
08yet I remained my own jailer.
09That mad and rebellious self of mine
10raised a tumult within me,
11pounded her fists against the walls,
12and searched for a little opening.
13She wandered within me
14like a spirit in a chamber at night.
15She cast a shadow within me
16like a cloud over a desert.
17At midnight, in sleep, I heard
18the sobbing of her tears.
19Within my voice, I listened
20to the flowing pain of her voice.
21Ashamed, I called her back to me:
22“Why do you weep in vain?”
23Amid her tears, she cried,
24“I love him—do you not know?”
25Her cry was that trembling cry
26that rose from a distant world.
27But whenever it echoed within me,
28a dead man rose from the grave,
29a dead man from whose body poured
30the passionate fragrance of night-scented flowers.
31My heart trembled within my breast
32like the hearts of young gazelles.
33He came forward in the darkness.
34His body was made of particles of darkness.
35As he drew closer to me,
36he was a dark abyss of pleasure.
37I sat wearily in bed,
38gazing into the eyes of dreams.
39The little boat of my thoughts quietly
40passed beyond the boundaries of worlds.
41Again, a dust-covered image
42of that little night, that night of our meeting,
43of that silent room, overflowing
44with groundless happiness.
45In the darkness, my hands
46blossomed from the touch of his hands.
47He was the shape of my bewilderment.
48His eyes smelled of sorrow.
49Our roots were in the darkness;
50our hearts were fruits of light.
51We filled one another
52with the spring of distant gardens.
53I sat wearily in bed,
54gazing into the eyes of dreams.
55The little boat of my thoughts quietly
56passed beyond the boundaries of worlds.
57The days passed, and now
58I myself no longer know which self I am:
59am I that proud, stubbornly proud self,
60or my long-defeated self?
61If I break my promise,
62this sorrow will kill me once more.
63I sit; perhaps he will come,
64at last, one day, to see me.
