01

Beside a handful of earth,

02

far away within myself, I sit alone.

03

The oscillations turned to dust,

04

and the dust slipped between my fingers and fell.

05

You have become like nothing!

06

Entrust your face to the coldness of the earth.

07

I have lost my own height.

08

I am afraid: of the next moment, and of this window opened onto

09

my feelings.

10

A leaf fell upon the forgetfulness of my hand: an acacia leaf!¹

11

It smells of a lost song, of a lullaby that

12

sways over my mother's face.

13

From the window,

14

I watch the sunset on the wall of my childhood.

15

It was in vain, in vain.

16

This wall collapsed upon the doors of the green garden.

17

The golden chain of games, and the bright opening of stories, went beneath this rubble.

18

Over there, my darkness is visible:

19

I stand on a domed mud-brick roof, like a sorrow.

20

And I have poured my gaze into the vapor of sunset.

21

On these steps, a sorrow sat alone.

22

In these corridors, an expectation wandered.

23

The old ‘I’ went dark upon these green earthenware lattices.

24

In the shifting shade of this acacia tree, it watched the eclipsing sun with a

25

sweet fear.

26

The sun burns in the window.

27

The window overflowed with leaves.

28

I slipped with a leaf.

29

The binding of threads is not mine.

30

I drink my own air,

31

and far away within myself, I sit alone.

32

My finger turns the earth over

33

and scatters the images. It slips. It falls asleep.

34

It draws an image, a green image: branches, leaves.

35

I fly over bright gardens.

36

My eyes fill with grasses,

37

and my heartbeats mingle with the branches and leaves.

38

I fly. I fly.

39

Above a remote plain,

40

the sunlight burns my wings, and in the hatred of wakefulness

41

I fall to the earth.

42

Someone walks upon the ashes of my wings.

43

A hand was drawn across my forehead. I became a shadow:

44

‘Shasusa,’ is it you?

45

You are late:

46

from the lullaby of childhood to the glare of this sunlight, I waited for you.

47

In the green night of the lattices I called you, in the dawn of the river,

48

in the sunlight of the marble stones.

49

And in this thirst of darkness I call you: ‘Shasusa’!

50

Turn this sunlit plain to night,

51

so I may find the lost road, and in my own footprints

52

go dark.

53

‘Shasusa,’ black and naked gust!

54

Envelop the earth of my life.

55

Its lips were made of silence.

56

Its finger slipped toward nowhere.

57

Suddenly, the outline of its face fell apart, and the wind carried away its dust.

58

I have set out over tear-soaked grasses.

59

I have lost a dream among these grasses.

60

My hands are full of the futility of searches.

61

The old ‘I’ wandered alone through these plains.

62

When it died,

63

the dream of the lattices and the scent of acacia were between its fingers.

64

I have set out upon a sorrow.

65

I am close to a night. My darkness is visible:

66

In the night of ‘those days,’ I hold a lantern.

67

The acacia tree stands in the lantern's light.

68

Its leaves are asleep. They have become like a lullaby.

69

I hear my mother.

70

The sun has mingled with the window.

71

My mother's murmur follows the rhythm of the moving leaves.

72

A cradle sways.

73

Behind this wall, they are carving an inscription.

74

Do you hear?

75

Between two empty moments, you came in and I departed.

76

As though I had opened a door onto the coldness of the earth:

77

the cemetery shone into my life.

78

My childhood games withered upon these black stones.

79

I hear the stones: the eternity of sorrow.

80

Beside a grave, how futile waiting is.

81

‘Shasusa’ had grown upon black marble:

82

‘Shasusa,’ my dark likeness!

83

I am tainted with sunlight.

84

Darken me, dark, utterly dark; pour the night of your form into me.

85

Look at my hand: the road of my life goes dark within you.

86

A road into emptiness. A journey into darkness:

87

do you hear the caravan's bell?

88

I have become a fellow traveler to a handful of nightmares.

89

The road began in night, reached the sunlight, and now crosses

90

the boundary of darkness.

91

The caravan crossed a shallow river.

92

Dawn spilled onto the waves.

93

A face in the silvery water laughs at death:

94

‘Shasusa’! ‘Shasusa’!

95

In the mist of images, the graves breathe.

96

Shasusa's smile spills onto the earth,

97

and its finger points to a lost place: an inscription!

98

The stone sways.

99

Acacia blossoms open in my mother's lullaby: eternity is in the branches.

100

Beside a handful of earth,

101

far away within myself, I sit alone.

102

The leaves slip over my feelings.
