THE AVALANCHE OF SUNLIGHT · POEM 9 OF 32
The Dust of a Smile
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Sunlight seeped from the bushes.
02I saw my companion in the damp plains.
03Drunk with the sorrow of gazing, a companion of the wind,
04hair loose, cheeks dewed.
05We saw a tulip—a smile upon the plain—
06a ray poured into clear water.
07My companion poured a voice into the furrow of the wind:
08‘Its splendor has mingled with the scent of earth.’
09The river shone, and my companion was a wave of sound:
10‘Our eyes grew fixed upon the river of illusion.’
11The veil was bright. My companion sang darkly:
12‘The smoke of illusion holds the images in its hands.’
13My eye fell upon my companion's body. The voice said:
14‘The blight of withering is close to it.’
15The plain: a sea of throbbing rhythm, of light.
16My companion's dark laughter cast a shadow.
